FORD'S FOUR-HITTER FINISHES OFF DODGERS, YANKEES WIN
SERIES
Whitey
Ford, using the momentum established by his teammate Johnny Kucks the day
before, whitewashed the Brooklyn Dodgers on four hits, propelling the Yankees
to a 5-0 victory, claiming the 1955 World Series Championship. In the end, the best
record in baseball proved pivotal, as the home team won each of the seven games
in the Fall Classic, with Ford coming up large in the series finale.
Gil
McDougald provided all the offense Ford would need with a solo homerun off
Johnny Podres in the third inning,
but McDougald added more salt to the wound when he drove home two more runs
with a double in the fifth inning, a drive that sent Podres to the
showers.
The Dodgers
threatened in the seventh after Ford walked a pair following a single by
Roy Campanella, but Frank Kellert grounded back to the box to end the threat.
Ford pitched
around minor trouble in both the eighth and
ninth innings, but by then the Yankee left-hander had scored an insurance
run himself in the seventh, the Yankees’ fifth and final tally.
Ford pitched
around the late inning threats, then retired Sandy Amoros swinging for the final out
of the season.
Ford, who
lost the final game of the 1954 World Series 10-2 to Brooklyn, and the New York
Yankees achieved their goal, a Championship and redemption against their
cross-town rivals, all wrapped into one.
