DODGER BATS EXPLODE AGAIN, WAX YANKEES, 13-6

Don Newcombe and the Dodger defense spotted the Yankees five runs in the first inning, but the Brooklyn batting machine exploded for a second straight day, scoring three runs in the first inning and four more in the second, to roll to a 13-6 victory, and even up the World Series at two games apiece.

The day began rather bleak for Newcombe when Gil McDougald and Irv Noren got things started for New York with singles, and were given an extra 90 feet on a misplay by Duke Snider in center field.  After Mantle fouled out on a terrific defensive play by Gil Hodges, Yogi Berra was walked intentionally to load the bases and set up the double play with Hank Bauer stepping to the plate.  The strategy came within a stride of working, as Bauer grounded to second, but the relay to first was a hair late, and the Yankees were on the board with the fielder’s choice grounder, 1-0.  The Yankees didn’t stop there.  Hodges booted a grounder struck by Joe Collins for what should have been the third out, instead another run crossing home plate, then Andy Carey lofted a fly ball down the left field line, just inside the foul pole that cleared the wall for a three-run blast, making it a 5-0 Yankee lead.

The shocked and subdued Brooklyn crowd came to life quickly in the home half of the 1st, as it was clear early that Whitey Ford was not his usual self on this day.  Ford walked Gilliam on four pitches to start things off, then Pee Wee Reese homered to straight away left to get the Dodgers on the board, and the crowd in the game.  A double by Snider followed by two ground balls netted a third run for Brooklyn, and Newcombe looked revitalized as he took the mound in the second, down only two after the disastrous first inning.

After pitching around his own throwing error in the top of the second, Newcombe laced a key double down the right field line in the bottom of the inning that set up runners at second and third with one down.  Ford let loose a wild pitch to score one, then walked two more batters to load the bases ahead of Snider.  Ford rallied to strike out Snider for the second out, but Roy Campanella delivered a double into the left field corner to put the Bums on top, 6-5.

Gil Hodges greeted reliever Bob Grim with another hit to score Reese to make it 7-5.

The Yankees threatened in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but Newcombe managed to strand runners in scoring position in each frame, and more importantly the Yankees off the scoreboard.

The Dodgers eventually put the game away in the seventh on a two-run double by Snider that made it a 10-5 contest.

Two more in the eighth inning made it a total of 13 unanswered runs for the Dodgers, enough of a cushion that they let the 19 year old Sandy Koufax have a go at it in the ninth inning.  The nervous teenager got the three outs he needed, despite allowing a run on a hit and a walk, and the Dodgers got the win they needed to even up the Series.
