DODGER MAKE BEST OF TURLEY'S WILDNESS, NIP YANKS 3-2
Thanks
to the generosity of Yankees starter Bob Turley, the Dodgers needed just two
hits to tally three runs, which Roger Craig and the Brooklyn bullpen made stand
up for a 3-2 triumph, matching the Bums 3-2 World Series lead.
Turley, who
lasted just 2-1/3 innings in Game Two, walking six in that start, bettered that
by one in this one, and got started in the very first inning in this contest. Jim Gilliam led off with a base on balls, then took second on a sacrifice executed by Pee Wee
Reese. Duke Snider followed with a fly ball to left that allowed
Gilliam to move to third base, from where he scampered home with the game’s
first run when Andy Carey bobbled a ground ball off the bat of Roy Campanella. Perhaps irritated by Carey’s miscue, Turley proceeded to walk
Gil Hodges, Carl Furillo, and Jackie Robinson in succession, with a wild pitch
thrown into the mix, to give the Dodgers a second run in the inning.
Turley
seemed to find a rhythm in the second inning,
retiring the Dodgers in order, but gave up his second and last hit of the game
in the third, a homerun to left field by Campanella that put the Dodgers in the
lead 3-0.
Mickey
Mantle clouted his third homerun of the World Series with a man aboard in the
fifth inning, but the Yankees could do nothing further with Roger Craig the
rest of the day.
Turley
continued to struggle with his command with walks in each of his next three innings,
but to his credit kept the Dodgers from scoring any further through his seven
innings of work. His day ended with three runs allowed on two hits, but seven
walks.
Karl Spooner
pitched a clean eighth for the
Dodgers, then Ed Roebuck nailed down the ninth inning for the save, and
the Dodgers finished off the Ebbets Field sweep with
their third straight victory.
