BRAVES BATTER LEMON TO TAKE 2-1 WORLD SERIES LEAD
Milwaukee
put up six early runs to knock Bob Lemon from the hill after just two innings,
and Bob Buhl kept Cleveland largely in check into the eighth inning, as the
Braves whipped the Indians 10-4. The win
gave the Braves a 2-1 lead in the World Series.
The Braves
wasted little time in getting to Cleveland’s 20-game winner, Bob Lemon. In the bottom of the first inning Johnny
Logan and Hank Aaron slashed one out singles to put runners at the corners. Eddie Mathews then brought Logan home with a
sacrifice fly to left field, his fourth RBI of the series, to put the first run
on the board.
The Indians
wasted no time in responding. After Al
Rosen led off the top of the second with a pop out to short, Rocky Colavito
continued wielding his hot bat with a drive over Aaron’s head in right field
and up against the wall. When Aaron was
unable to find the handle right away to get the ball back into the infield,
Colavito continued right on to third on what was scored as a double and an
error by the Braves right fielder. Jim
Busby followed with an infield single to score Colavito, and the game was
quickly tied up 1-1.
The Braves
untied it in the home half of the second, and opened the game up for good. Wes
Covington led things off with a single to left field. Billy Bruton then chopped a single between
short and third moving Covington to second.
Del Crandall followed by yanking an inside fastball from Lemon down the
third base line for a double. Covington
scored easily, Bruton rounded, but held, third base. After Lemon struck out his counterpart Bob
Buhl, Danny O’Connell lined a single to left center field scoring both runners,
and the Braves were rolling, 4-1. Lemon
walked Logan to push O’Connell to second.
Aaron followed by legging out a slow ground ball toward Al Rosen at
third. Rosen’s throw was in the dirt, but late, and Aaron had a single of the
infield variety to load the bases.
Mathews brought home the Braves fifth run of the contest on a ground
ball that Vic Wertz kicked for an error.
Joe Adcock brought home the final run of the frame with a ground ball
scoring Logan from third. In the inning,
the Braves tallied five runs on five hits, leading to Lemon’s exit when his
spot in the lineup came up in the top of the third inning.
Jim Hegan
doubled in Chico Carrasquel, who had singled after two were out in the fourth,
to make it 6-2, but the Braves got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on
a double by Logan, single by Aaron, and fielder’s choice by Mathews.
Milwaukee
ultimately put the game out of reach in the seventh with three runs off Don
Mossi, two coming on a triple by Bruton, the third on a sacrifice fly from
Crandall.
Wertz added
a little window dressing for Cleveland in the top of the eighth with a solo
homerun off Buhl to make it 10-3. A
single by Busby followed by a triple by Carrasquel finished off the Indians
scoring as well as Buhl’s day on the hill, 7-2/3 innings, four runs allowed.
Bob
Trowbridge registered the last four outs for Milwaukee, much to be delight of a
damp crowd of over 44,000, who watched their Braves take a lead in the series,
and leave open the chance of winning it all in Milwaukee with two wins in the
next two days.
