Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Game 1: Edinson Volquez vs. Clayton Kershaw, Dodger Stadium
KERSHAW OVERCOMES TOUGH 1ST TO LEAD DODGERS PAST BUCS
Pirates Held to 2 Hits
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3 (AP) – Clayton Kershaw shrugged off a difficult first inning, tossing seven innings of two-hit ball, to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opening game of the NLDS at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw retired the final 19 batters he faced before leaving for a pinch hitter. Brandon League and Brian Wilson worked a scoreless eighth and Kenley Jansen tossed a perfect ninth to close the game for the Dodgers.
Kershaw got off to a rocky start. After striking out Josh Harrison to open the game, Starling Marte lined a double to left-center and Andrew McCutcheon drew a walk. Russell Martin followed by drawing a free pass of his own, loading the bases. Kershaw fanned Neil Walker for the second out, but Jose Tabata grounded an 0-2 pitch into center field for a base hit, scoring Harrison and Marte to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.
The Dodgers got a run back in the home half of the opening frame when, with one out, Yasiel Puig tripled to right-center off Pittsburgh starter Edinson Volquez and scored on Adrian Gonzalez’s ground out.
Kerahaw set the Pirates down in order in the second, much to the relief of the sellout crowd, and then the Dodgers took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning. Carl Crawford reached on a one-out infield single. Juan Uribe followed with a base hit to center, and when McCutcheon overran the ball, Crawford came all the way around to score, tying the game, with Uribe ended up on second. A wild pitch moved Uribe to third and A.J. Ellis drew a walk, putting runners on the corners and bringing Kershaw to the plate. Kershaw’s grounder to short scored Uribe, putting the Dodgers on top 3-2, and advancing Ellis to second. Dee Gordon grounded to second to end the inning.
Uribe’s two-out solo home run off Volquez in the bottom of the fourth increased the Los Angeles lead to two runs.
Kershaw, meanwhile, had moved into an undeniable groove, and mowed down the Pirates with frightening ease. No one reached base after Tabata’s first inning single, through the seventh inning when Kershaw was removed for a pinch hitter. At that point, Kerahaw had gone through the Pittsburgh lineup more than two full times without allowing anyone to reach base, a span of 19 batters.
League came on for the Dodgers in the eighth, nursing a two-run lead. But he walked Jordy Mercer, giving Pirates their first baserunner since the first inning. Pinch hitter Travis Snider flied to right for the first out, but League hit Harrison with a pitch, putting the tying runs on base. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly replaced League with Wilson, who put out the fire, retiring Marte on a routine fly to left, and McCutcheon on a grounder to third.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers added an insurance run when, with two outs, Gonzalez and Matt Kemp drew back-to-back two-out walks from Justin Wilson. Jarred Hughes replaced Wilson, but yielded a base hit to Hanley Ramirez. Gonzalez scored, with Kemp thrown out at third to end the inning. But it was now 5-2 in favor of the Dodgers.
Jansen came on in the ninth and retired Martin, Walker and Gregory Polanco on routine fly balls to nail down the save.
The two clubs will meet in Game 2 of the series tomorrow.

PUIG COMES THROUGH WITH GAME-TYING, WINNING HITS
L.A. Holds Commanding 2-0 Lead as Series Moves to Steel City
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (AP) – Trailing by three and looking lethargic entering the bottom of the ninth, the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to tie the game against Pirates closer Mark Melancon and then won the contest on Yasiel Puig’s walk-off home run in the 12th to take a 2-0 NLDS lead over Pittsburgh at Dodger Stadium. With four hits in the ninth inning, the Dodgers matched their total for the first eight frames put together. The comeback was just the latest of many that have taken place in the various Divisional playoff series.
Starters Francisco Liriano and Zack Greinke matched zcoreless frames through three, but the Pirates got to Greinke in the fourth. Russell Martin led off with a home run to left, giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead and, one out later, Ike Davis singled. Jordy Mercer’s base hit put runners on first and third and then Liriano, allowed to hit away, helped himself with a base hit through Greinke’s legs, scoring Davis, with Mercer stopping at second. Josh Harrison struck out, but Travis Snider dropped a base hit into center field, filling the bases. Greinke then uncorked a wild pitch, plating Mercer and advancing the other runners 90 feet, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. Andrew McCutcheon flied to right to end the inning.
The Dodgers closed the gap a bit in the bottom of the fifth. Juan Uribe led off with a base hit and A.J. Ellis followed by drawing a walk. Justin Turner pinch hit for Greinke and his soft grounder to third allowed the runners to advance a base apiece. Dee Gordon dropped a base hit into left, plating Uribe to make the score 3-1, and leaving runners on the corners. John Holdskom took over for Liriano and retired Puig on a line drive to third and Adrian Gonzalez on a ground ball to allow Pittsburgh to retain a two-run lead.
The Pirates picked up an insurance run in the seventh off Pedro Baez, who was in his second inning of relief. Snider led off with a base hit and took second on McCutcheon’s ground out. Neil Walker then laced a single to left-center, plating Snider with Pittsburgh’s fourth run of the game.
The score was still 4-1 when the game moved to the bottom of the ninth. Melancon retired Hanley Ramirez on a routine fly to right to open the inning. But Carl Crawford slapped a base hit to left and Uribe followed with a single to center, bringing the tying run to the plate. Melancon fired a wild pitch, moving the runners to second and third and then went on to walk Ellis, loading the bases. Scott Van Slyke cane on to pinch hit and promptly dropped a single down the right field line, scoring both Crawford and Uribe, cutting the deficit to 4-3, and chasing Ellis to third. Melancon then struck out Dee Gordon, and it seemed the Pirates might escape after all. But Puig came through for the Dodgers, flipping a base hit into left, scoring Ellis to tie the game and sending the Dodger Stadium crowd, almost all of whom had stayed put, into a full-blown frenzy. Melancon fanned Gonzalez to end the inning, but the Dodgers had forced extra innings.
Things were relatively quiet until the bottom of the 12th. The Pirates, virtually out of arms, inserted Stolmy Pimentel into the game to face Puig, who was due to lead off. The count moved to 2-1 and then Puig unloaded, driving the ball several rows into the left field pavilion for the game-winning blast.

BUCS SURVIVE DESPITE BLOWING 6-RUN LEAD, FORCE GAME 4
Walker’s Walk-Off Hit in 9th Salvages Game
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 6 (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates blew a 6-0 lead in another late-inning meltdown, but staunched the bleeding and rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth on Neil Walker’s base hit to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 at PNC Park and force Game 4 in the NLDS. After holding the Dodgers to two hits through six innings, the Pirates staff surrendered 14 safeties over the final three frames, but Pittsburgh still came out on top in the end.
Hyun-Jin Ryu and Gerrit Cole traded scoreless frames until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Pirates jumped out on top. Russell Martin reached on an infield hit leading off, and Jose Tabata doubled him to third. Gaby Sanchez then ripped a home run into the lower seats in left to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, with Dan Haren on the mound for Los Angeles, the Pirates doubled their pleasure. Andrew McCutcheon led off with a single—his first hit of the series—and stole second base. Walker dropped a single into shallow center, with McCutcheon advancing to third, and Martin followed with a double to right, scoring McCutcheon and chasing Walker to third. Tabata grounded to first and Adrian Gonzalez cut Walker down at the plate for the first out of the inning. Up 4-0, the Pirates called on Ike Davis to pinch hit for Sanchez with runners on the corners. Scott Elbert replaced Haren on the mound. Davis chopped a grounder to Hanley Ramirez at short, and the ball was kicked for an error, scoring Martin and advancing Tabata to second. It was now 5-0. Jordy Mercer then singled to right-center, scoring Tabata, to put the Pirates on top 6-0. Cole hit for himself and grounded to short, with Ramirez throwing Davis out at the plate. Josh Harrison popped to short to finally end the inning.
With a comfortable six-run lead, Cole started the ninth by retiring Carl Crawford on a fly to left, then yielded a swinging but single to Juan Uribe, before fanning A.J. Ellis for out number two. Andre Ethier hit for Elbert and drew a walk, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle summoned lefty Bobby LaFromboise from the bullpen to face Dee Gordon, but Gordon broke the shutout by lining a single to center, scoring Uribe and advancing Ethier to second. Yasiel Puig then singled to left, driving home Ethier with the second run of the inning, with Gordon stopping at second. Adrian Gonzalez followed with another base hit, this one to left, plating Gordon and Puig holding at second. With the score now 6-3, Hurdle reemerged from the Pirates dugout and brought Jarrod Hughes into the game, but he immediately yielded a base hit to Matt Kemp, with Puig coming home with the fourth Los Angeles run and Gonzalez replacing Puig at second. Ramirez popped out to finally end the inning, but the six-run advantage was now down to two with two innings left to play.
The entire sellout crowd at PNC Park breathed easier when McCutcheon blasted a mammoth solo home run into the upper tier of seats in left field off Brian Wilson in the bottom of the seventh, increasing the lead to 7-4.
Tony Watson came on for Pittsburgh in the top of the eighth and retired Crawford on a grounder to short to start things off, but consecutive singles off the bats of Uribe and Ellis brought the tying run to the plate in the form of pinch hitter Justin Turner. Turner ripped a 1-0 offering into the gap in right-center field for a double, scoring Uribe and chasing Ellis to third. It was now 7-5, and Justin Wilson replaced Watson. Gordon lifted a sacrifice fly all the way to the warning track in left, scoring Ellis and sending Turner to third. Puig was walked intentionally, but Gonzalez foiled the strategy by lining a base hit to right, scoring Turner with the tying run as the crowd stood in a collective shocked silence. Kemp fanned, but the Dodgers had come all the way back to tie the game.
Brandon League cruised through the bottom of the eighth for Los Angeles, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Mark Melancon came on for Pittsburgh in the top of the ninth and ran into trouble when Ramirez led off with an infield hit. Crawford hit into a force play for the first out and Uribe grounded into another fielder’s choice, leaving a runner on first with two outs. But Ellis rapped out his third hit of the game, a single, with Uribe stopping at second. Pinch hitter Scott Van Slyke then grounded to third to keep the score tied.
In the bottom of the ninth, with J.P. Howell pitching for the Dodgers, Harrison reached on a one-out infield single, then stole second base. Starling Marte struck out and Howell walked McCutcheon intentionally, preferring to go after Walker. But Walker came through and sent the PNC faithful into a frenzy when he dumped a base hit into shallow left field. The speedy Harrison beat the throw to the plate and the Pirates had survived.

DODGERS RIDE 5-RUN 4TH INTO NLCS BERTH
Haren, 3 Relievers Suppress Bucs Attack
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 7 (AP) – The Los Angeles Dodgers scored five runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 at PNC Park, winning the series 3-1 in the process. The Dodgers now move on to the National League Championship Series where they will face either the St. Louis Cardinals or Washington Nationals. Starter Dan Haren gave the Dodgers a solid effort, allowing two runs over six innings of work. Scott Elbert, Chris Perez and Kenley Jansen each tossed a scoreless frame for Los Angeles, with Jansen earning his second save of the series.
The Pirates drew first blood in their quest to extend the series to a fifth game. Russell Martin doubled with one out in the second off Haren, and advanced to third on Starling Marte’s base hit. Ike Davis then sliced a double to left, scoring both runners for a 2-0 Pittsburgh lead.
Los Angeles answered in a big way in the top of the fourth off Vance Worley. Yasiel Puig led off with a single to right and Adrian Gonzalez tied the game with a blast that landed more than halfway up the right field grandstand, knotting the score at two runs apiece. Matt Kemp doubled to right. Hanley Ramirez grounded to short for the first out, but a single off the bat of Carl Crawford chased Kemp to third and Juan Uribe’s base hit scored Kemp, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, and leaving runners on the corners. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle had run through his entire bullpen the previous day in a desperate attempt to hold off a Dodgers rally, but he quickly got someone up, all the while hoping that Worley could get out of the inning with no further damage. Worley struck out A.J. Ellis and the prospect of getting through the inning with the deficit remaining at one run seemed reasonable, given that the opposing pitcher was due up next. But Haren dumped a base hit over the head of shortstop Jordy Mercer, scoring Crawford and advancing Uribe to third. It was now 4-2 and Hurdle pulled Worley, inserting Stolmy Pimentel into the game. But Dee Gordon greeted the new pitcher with a single to right, the seventh hit of the inning, scoring Uribe to make it 5-2. Puig, batting for the second time in the frame, grounded to third, finally bringing the inning to a close.
Although the Pirates had baserunners—five hits and two walks--throughout the remainder of the game, none of them advanced past second base. After Haren was removed for a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh, Elbert came on, yielded a base hit to pinch hitter Jose Tabata, then induced a double play ball off the bat of Jordy Mercer and retired Gaby Sanchez on a pop to second. Perez retired Pittsburgh in order in the eighth and Jansen retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth. But Davis slashed his second double of the game and Jansen walked pinch hitter Chris Stewart, brining the tying run to the plate in the form of Mercer. Jansen induced the Pirates shortstop to ground to first, ending the game and the series.
