Los Angeles Angels vs. Baltimore Orioles
Game 1: C.J. Wilson vs. Chris Tillman, Oriole Park at Camden Yards
TROUT HOMERS TWICE AS HALOS WIN ALDS OPENER
Trout Drive in 4, Cron 3
BALTIMORE, Oct. 3 (AP) – Mike Trout, the likely MVP of the American League, hit a pair of home runs and the Los Angeles Angels cruised to a 7-3 victory in the opener of their American League Divisional Series against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Trout gave the Angels the lead with a solo home run off Orioles starter Chris Tillman in the top of the first and the Angels never looked back. The two clubs will play Game 2 tomorrow at Oriole Park.
After Trout put the Angels on top 1-0, the Angels added to their lead in the second inning. Howie Kendrick led off with a single through the box and C.J. Cron, the hero of the Wildcard Game, cracked a long home run just inside the left field foul pole to put Los Angeles ahead 3-0. Tillman settled down at that point, and retired the next 14 batters he faced, but the damage had been done.
Angels starter C.J. Wilson set down the first 10 batters he faced, before issuing a one-out walk to Steve Pearce in the fourth, then walked Adam Jones, giving the Orioles runners on first and second. But Nelson Cruz flied to right and, after a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Delmon Young struck out to end the inning.
An error on Kendrick allowed J.J. Hardy to reach leading off the bottom of the fifth and a single by Nick Hundley put two men on with no outs, but Ryan Flaherty rolled into a double play and Jonathan Schoop fanned to end the threat.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wilson walked Nick Markakis and Pearce to open the inning and Angels manager Mike Scioscia had seen enough, replacing Wilson with Jason Grilli. Grilli struck out Jones and retired Cruz on a long fly to left, with Markakis advancing to third. Young then came through with a single to left, scoring Markakis with the first Baltimore run of the game, but Grilli struck out Hardy to avoid further damage.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter brought Tillman out to start the seventh, but Hendrick greeted him with a triple into the left field corner and Cron followed immediately with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. After David Freese singled, Showalter replaced Tillman with Brian Matusz, who walked Hank Conger, putting runners on first and second. Kole Calhoun rolled into a fielder’s choice, forcing Conger at second, and Brad Brach came on for the Orioles and struck out Trout to end the inning.
It was still 4-1 in the ninth when the Angels blew the game open off reliever Tommy Hunter. With one out, Freese singled and Gordon Beckham entered the game to pinch run. Conger followed with a base hit, putting runners on first and second, and Calhoun struck out, but Trout belted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot this time, to make it 7-1.
The Orioles picked up a couple of consolation runs in the ninth off Vinnie Pestano when Kelly Johnson homered into the right field bleachers, scoring Hardy, who had walked earlier, but that was close as they would come. Pestano went on to retire Schoop and Markakis to close out the game.

ANGELS SNAP TIE IN 10TH, TAKE 2-0 LEAD IN ALDS
Cron Homers for 2nd Consecutive Game
BALTIMORE, Oct. 4 (AP) – Erik Aybar singled home pinch-runner Efren Navarro with the lead run with two outs in the top of the 10th, and the Los Angeles Angels went on to defeat the Baltimore Orioles to take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS at Camden Yards. The teams will now travel to Anaheim, California for Game 3, which will be an elimination game for the Orioles. Baltimore rallied in the seventh to tie a game they had trailed 3-1 at one point, but they were unable to score again.
The Angels picked up a run in the first when Josh Hamilton drew a leadoff walk from Orioles starter Bud Norris. Aybar’s ground out advanced the runner to second and, after Howie Kendrick struck out, C.J. Cron roped a ball into the right field corner that eluded Nick Markakis and went for a triple. Aybar scored to give the Angels the lead and David Freese fanned to end the inning.
Steve Pearce’s leadoff home run off Matt Shoemaker in the bottom of the fourth knotted the score at one.
In the fifth, the Angels regained the lead. Cron homered into the left field seats leading off the inning to put Los Angeles on top 2-1. Freese then walked and, one batter later, Kole Calhoun singled to right-center, advancing Freese to third. Darren O’Day replaced Norris and Mike Trout greeted him with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Freese to make it 3-1.
The Orioles drew within a run in the sixth. Adam Jones led off with an infield hit, but was eliminated by Nelson Cruz’s double play ball. Pearced walked and came around to score when J.J. Hardy doubled into the left field corner. Kevin Jepsen took over on the mound for Shoemaker and struck out Nick Hundley for the third out.
The Angels missed a chance to add to their lead in the top of the seventh. With Ryan Webb on the hill, Freese lined a leadoff single right and Hank Conger followed with a double to left-center, chasing Freese to third. Andrew Miller replaced Webb, and faced a very tough situation. But, with the infield in, Calhous grounded to second. Freese inexplicably tried to score and Jonathan Schoop easily cut him down at the plate. Miller then induced Trout to roll into a double play, keeping the deficit at a single run.
Baltimore erased that deficit in the bottom of the inning. Kelly Johnson pinch hit for Ryan Flaherty and lined a leadoff double to left center. Schoop sacrificed the runner to third and Markakis lined a base hit to right, tying the game. Fernando Salas came on for Los Angeles and retired Alejandro de Aza on strikes and Jones on a fly ball to avoid further damage.
Neither club was able to get a runner past second until the top of the 10th. With Zach Britton on for his second inning of work, Albert Pujols ripped a one-out double to left center and was replaced on second by pinch runner Navarro. Colin Cowgill grounded to second, advancing Navarro to third and Aybar came through, bouncing a single through the middle, to score Cowgill with the lead run.
Huston Street entered the game for the Angels in the bottom of the 10th and set the Orioles down in order to earn the save.
The Angels now need only one more victory to advance to the American League Championship Series.

O’S STAVE OFF ELIMINATION BY SHUTTING OUT ANGELS
Chen Lifts Birds with Strong Outing
ANAHEIM, Cal., Oct. 6 (AP) – Wei-Yin Chen tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings and the Baltimore bullpen backed him up with 2 ½ additional scoreless frames as the Baltimore Orioles avoided elimination with a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium. The Angels wasted a fine start by Jered Weaver, who allowed only one run on four hits in seven innings of work. The Angels now lead the best-of-five series 2-1 and will have another chance to wrap things up tomorrow.
The Orioles pushed a run across against Weaver in the top of the first inning. Alejandro de Aza singled with one out, stole second base, and scored on a single to right-center off the bat of Adam Jones. The Orioles didn’t pick up their third hit until the fifth, when Nick Hundley singled with one out and was stranded.
The Angels managed a base hit off Chen in the second, third and fifth innings, but never advanced a runner past first base.
In the top of the sixth, Jones singled with one out off Weaver and Nelson Cruz drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. But Weaver fanned Steve Pearce and J.J. Hardy to end the threat.
Mike Trout drew Chen’s first free pass with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Albert Pujols flied to right to end the inning.
After Weaver retired the Orioles in order in the top of the seventh, Chen began the bottom half of the inning by striking out Josh Hamilton. But Howe Kendrick then singled. Erik Aybar rolled into a fielder’s choice, forcing Kendrick at second, and then stole second base. It was the first time all game that the Angels advanced a runner past first base. Chen worked carefully to the red hot C.J. Cron, and ended up walking him. Baltimore manager Buck Showwalter decided to replace Chen with right-hander Brad Brach to face David Freese, and the mvove paid off when Freese grounded to short to end the inning.
Joe Smith came on for the Angels in the eighth and retired the Orioles in order. It was the sixth time in eight frames that the Orioles had been retired 1-2-3. Andrew Miller pitched the bottom of the eighth for Baltimore and set the Angels down with ease, fanning the last two batters he faced—Kole Calhoun and Trout.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia brought Huston Street on in the ninth to keep the deficit at a single run, but things quickly went south. Cruz led off with a base hit and was replaced by pinch runner Ryan Flaherty. Pearce followed with a single through the box, leaving runners on first and second. J.J. Hardy then popped up a bunt attempt, and Street grabbed it for the first out. Street then made a mistake with an 0-2 offering to Kelly Johnson, who drove right fielder Calhoun to the wall for the second out, with Flaherty tagging and advancing to third. Hundley then sliced a double into the right field corner, scoring both runners to give the Orioles a 3-0 advantage.
The Angels threatened against Tommy Hunter in the ninth. Pujols struck out leading off, but Hamilton doubled to the gap in right-center. Kendrick grounded to third for the second out but Aybar dropped a base hit into left, putting runners on the corners. With Cron at the plate, Showalter decided to call on his closer, Zach Britton, even though he was giving up the platoon advantage. Again the move paid off, when Cron grounded to Johnson at third to end the game.

Game 4: Kevin Gausman vs. Hector Santiago, Angel Stadium
O’S POUND SANTIAGO EARLY, HANG ON TO FORCE GAME 5
Jones (4 Hits), Cruz (HR) Pace Birds Attack
ANAHEIM, Cal., Oct. 7 (AP) – The Baltimore Orioles scored six times in the first three innings and went on to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 in Game 4 of the ALDS at Angel Stadium. The series will return to Camden Yards for a decisive Game 5. Adam Jones banged out four hits for the Orioles and Nelson Cruz belted a three-run homer. Ryan Flaherty also homered and drove in three runs for Baltimore. Kevin Gausman allowed one run over six strong innings to earn the win.
Hector Santiago got the start for the Angels and failed to last through the second inning. In the opening frame, Santiago walked Steve Pearce with one out, then allowed a base hit to right off the bat of Jones. Cruz followed with a no-doubt home run that hit the back wall of the bullpen in left field, giving the Orioles a 3-0 lead.
After Gausman set the Angels down in order in the bottom of the first, the Orioles padded their lead in the top of the second. Nick Hundley drew a leadoff walk from Santiago and Flaherty followed with a two-run shot into the seats down the right field line for a 5-0 lead. Santiago retired the next two hitters on fly balls but after Pearce singled, Angels manager Mike Scioscia had seen enough and summoned Cory Rasmus from the bullpen. He yielded a base hit to Jones before setting down Cruz on a grounder to third to end the inning.
Gausman pitched around a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the second to keep Los Angeles scoreless, and then Baltimore added yet anther run in the top of the third. J.J. Hardy doubled to left with one out and Flaherty sliced a single to left to bring the run home, making it 6-0.
Gausman scattered individual hits in the fourth and fifth innings before finally yielding a run to the Angels in the sixth. Mike Trout led off with a double and, two batters later, advanced to third on a wild pitch. Erik Aybar then bounced a single through the hole into left field, scoring Trout. Howie Kendrick flied to right to end the inning.
The Angels bullpen kept the Orioles subdued for the rest of the game, giving their club a chance to get back in the game, and they nearly did in the eighth. Ryan Webb set down the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, but he walked Kole Calhoun to start the eighth, and Orioles manager Buck Showalter called on Darren O’Day to avoid trouble. O’Day set down Trout and Albert Pujols on routine fly balls, but surrendered a base hit to Josh Hamilton, leaving runners on first and second, and then yielded a double to Aybar, scoring Calhoun to make it 6-2 and advancing Hamilton to third. When O’Day then hit Kendrick with a pitch, the tying run was at the plate, but the Orioles reliever settled down and retired C.J. Cron on a grounder to second to avoid further damage.
Showalter tried to avoid using his closer, Zach Britton, in the ninth inning, and sent Miguel Gonzalez to the mound with a four-run lead, but Gonzalez walked David Freese to open the frame and then booted pinch hitter Efren Navarro’s comebacker--a potential double play ball--for an error, leaving runners at first and second with no outs. With the tying run standing in the on-deck circle and the top of the order coming up, Showalter summoned Britton from the bullpen, and he delivered, striking out Calhoun and Trout and retiring Pujols on a fly to center to send the series back to Baltimore for one more game.

BALTIMORE, Oct. 9 (AP) – Delmon Young’s RBI-single in the bottom of the 8th inning broke a 5-all tie and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-5 at Camden Yards in Game 5 of the American League Divisional Series at Camden Yards. The victory-the first by a home team in the series—completed a comeback from an 0-2 hole and advances the Orioles to the American League Championship Series against either the Oakland Athletics or Kansas City Royals. Young’s two-out base hit drove home Steve Pearce from second and allowed the club to erase the sting of blowing a three-run lead in the top half of the inning when Josh Hamilton homered off of Andrew Miller.
The contest was filled with twists, turns and bizarre events. The Orioles scored first, in the bottom of the opening inning. Angels starter C.J. Wilson walked leadoff hitter Nick Markakis, the first of six free passes Santiago would issue in four-plus innings of work. Pearce then doubled Markakis to third, and Adam Jones walked, loading the bases. It appeared that the Orioles would run out to a big lead early, as they did in Game 4, but it wasn’t to be. Nelson Cruz did put Baltimore on the board with a deep fly to left, that not only scored Markakis but advanced Pearce to third. But Young popped out to second and J.J. Hardy fouled out to catcher Hank Conger to limit the damage to a single run.
The Angels promptly took advantage. Hamilton singled—the first of his three hits on the day—off Orioles starter Chris Tillman, and Erik Aybar’s sacrifice attempt was so good that it went for a bunt single, leaving runners on first and second. Tillman fell behind Howie Kendrick 3-0, and then crossed up catcher Nick Hundley, throwing a breaking ball when Hundley expected a fast ball. The pitch missed the strike zone for ball four, but Hundley whiffed on it completely and the ball went to the backstop, and caroming in the direction of the first base side visitors dugout. Charged as a passed ball, it allowed the alert Hamilton to come all the way around to score, tying the game, and advanced Aybar to third. C.J. Cron then grounded into a double play, scoring Aybar with the lead run, but clearing the bases in front of David Freese, who popped to second to end the bizarre inning with Los Angeles on top, 2-1.
Wilson walked Jonathan Schoop with two outs in the bottom of the second, but pitched around the free pass, striking out a pair of hitters. He also walked Cruz with two outs in the third, but struck out the side.
Hamilton led off the top of the fourth with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Tillman was able to work around the runner-on-second, no-one-out situation by retiring Aybar on an infield pop out and fanning Kendrick and Cron.
The score was still 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Wilson’s control issues finally caught up with him. He walked Markasis—his fifth free pass to that point—to start the inning and the Angels bullpen was just beginning to get active when he walked Pearce on four pitches, putting runners on first and second. The Angels did what they could to delay things, but Mike Morin couldn’t get ready quickly enough to face Adam Jones who ripped a double into the right field corner, scoring Markakis to tie the game and advancing Pearce to third. Angels manager Mike Scioscia practically ran out to the mound to pull Wilson and Morin took his place, facing an ominous situation—second and third, no one out, and Nelson Cruz due. But Morin was magnificent. With the infield in, Cruz grounded to Kendrick at second, who held the runners and threw Cruz out at first. Young then lined sharply to Freese at third for the second out and Morin fanned Hardy to end the threat. The game was tied, but the Orioles had missed a golden opportunity to take the lead, if not blow the contest wide open.
The Angels tried to take advantage. Albert Pujols led off the top of the sixth with a base hit and Tillman walked Hamilton, who was having a massive series at the plate. Orioles manager Buck Showalter had his bullpen working, but after a visit to the mound, he—somewhat surprisingly—left Tillman in to face Aybar, who was already 2-for-2. But this time, Aybar popped out to first and then Howie Kendrick swung at the first pitch and bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Kevin Jepsen, who had pitched as effectively as any member of the Angels right-handed heavy bullpen during the regular season, began the bottom of the sixth, and immediately yielded a base hit to Hundley, who was replaced on first by pinch runner David Lough. Kelly Johnson hit for Ryan Flaherty and struck out, and Jepsen got Schoop on a pop to first for out number two. But Jepsen fell behind Markakis, who slapped a 2-0 pitch past Freese at third and down the left field line. The speedy Lough scored easily on the play, giving Baltimore a 3-2 lead, with Markakis ending up on second with a double. Pearce then lined a single to center. Markakis barely beat Trout’s throw to the plate, making it 4-2, with Pearce advancing to second. Scioscia summoned Joe Smith from the pen to take over for Jepsen, but Jones greeted him with a single to left-center, scoring Pearce. It was now 5-2. Cruz ended the inning by grounding to second.
The Orioles now appeared to let their trio of dominant relievers close out the game. Darren O’Day came on in the seventh, and cruised through the inning, retiring the Angels in order.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Orioles threatened to add to their lead. Young led off with a base hit to left and advanced to second on Hardy’s groundout. Lough, who had remained in the game in place of Cruz in left field after pinch running earlier, struck out, but Smith walked Kelly Johnson on a 3-2 pitch. Ball four was also a wild pitch and Young, who had been running on the play, was able to advance all the way to third. Jason Grilli replaced Smith and retired Schoop on a grounder to third to pitch out of trouble. At this point, the Orioles had stranded 10 baserunners in seven innings, but it didn’t seem likely that it would matter.
Andrew Miller, one of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball during the regular season, came on for the Orioles in the top of the eighth and fanned leadoff man Kole Calhoun. But he walked Trout on four pitches and Pujols followed by lining a single to right, bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Josh Hamilton. At this point, Hamilton was 9-for-16 in the series with three walks. Miller’s first pitch was a fastball and Hamilton was waiting for it. In one of the most stunning moments of the entire season, Hamilton drove the pitch into the bleachers in right-center field for a game-tying three-run homer. Despite a sellout crowd of better than 45,000, Oriole Park may have been the quietest spot in the State of Maryland as Hamilton circled the bases. Miller fanned Aybar and Kendrick to end the inning, but the damage had been done. The seemingly safe three-run lead was completely gone.
Showing some resilience, Markakis led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit off Grilli, the fourth time in the game that the Orioles right fielder had reached safely. Pearce grounded into a fielder’s choice, forcing Markakis, for the first out. Grilli then fanned Jones. But Caleb Joseph, who had entered the game as the catcher when Hundley was lifted for a pinch runner in the sixth, lined a single to left, advancing Pearce to second. Scioscia elected to lift Grilli in favor of Fernando Salas to face Young. On the very first pitch, Young grounded a single through the middle and into center field. Pearce scored without a throw, and suddenly the Orioles were back on top. Hardy grounded out to end the inning.
Zach Britton, who had saved both of the Orioles’ prior wins in the series, came on for Baltimore in the top of the ninth. He retired Cron on a grounder to short, and then fanned Freese. That brought Chris Iannetta to the plate. Ianetta lined an 0-1 offering sharply to center, but right at Jones, who made the catch to end the game.
The contest featured 11 walks—seven by Angels pitching—and 18 strikeouts, two wild pitches and a passed ball. The Orioles won despite stranding 12 batters in the game, and amassing 18 baserunners in eight innings to the Angels’ 11 in nine innings. In a series that could have gone either way, the Orioles managed, somehow, to advance.
