ROX GO BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK
Pads Held to 3 Hits
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 24 (AP) – Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer and Corey Dickerson hit consecutive solo home runs in the top of the first inning and the Colorado Rockies went on to defeat the San Diego Padres 4-1 at Petco Park. It was the sixth time this season that members of a team hit three long balls in a row; no club has accomplished the feat more than once.
After Padres starter Jon Weiland retired Charlie Blackmon and Rafael Ynoa to open the game, Morneau drove a 1-2 breaking ball into the seats in right for his 17th homer of the season. Cuddyer then jumped on a first pitch fastball for his 12th homer and Dickerson’s 22nd long ball came on a 3-2 pitch. It was the fifth time this season, and the second time in the last five days, that Colorado had at least three home runs in the same inning,. The Rockies hit three home runs, also in the first inning, on September 19 at Coors Field, as part of a 14-6 pounding of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Rockies pushed another run across against Weiland in the third when Ynoa led off with a single, and scored when Morneau singled and right fielder Rafael Liriano’s attempt to cut Ynoa down at third resulted in a wild throw. Ynoa trotted home on the miscue to give Colorado a 4-0 lead.
Rockies starter Yohan Flande tossed six innings of two-hit shutout baseball, earning his second win of the season in the process. San Diego did break the shutout against the Colorado bullpen in the seventh when Jedd Gyorko drew a lead-off walk from reliever Tommy Kahnle, advanced to third on Yosmani Grandal’s double, and scored on Tommy Medica’s ground out. But Kahnle limited the Padres to just one run, and Christian Freidrich and Brooks Brown combined on two perfect innings of relief to close out the contest.
