CUDDYER HITS 3 HRS AS ROX POUND D-BACKS
Rosario Goes 5-for-5
DENVER, Sept. 19 (AP) – Michael Cuddyer hit three home runs and Wilin Rosario banged out five hits as the Colorado Rockies routed the Arizona Diamondbacks 14-6 at Coors Field. Cuddyer became the sixth major league player this year—and the second National Leaguer—to hit three home runs in a game. He also drove in five runs and scored four times as part of a 4-for-5 effort. The 13 total bases Cuddyer amassed are the second highest single game total this season, behind only Yangervis Solarte of the San Diego Padres who posted 14 total bases on August 12 in a win over Colorado at Petco Park. Rosario became the 20th player to accumulate five hits in a nine-inning game this season. He is the 13th major leaguer to go 5-for-5 in a nine-inning contest.
The Rockies banged out a season-high 21 hits in the game and six Colorado players amassed multiple hits. The Diamondbacks accumulated 15 hits of their own and the 36 hits between the two teams is tied for the fourth most among combined clubs in a single game this major league season. Colorado hit six home runs in total, one below the team high for the year. The Rockies hit seven on August 20 in an 8-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Coors Field.
After A.J. Pollock tripled home Ender Inciarte, who had doubled leading off the contest, to give Arizona a 1-0 first inning lead, the Rockies laid down the gauntlet, scoring four times in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Rutledge homered with one out to tie the game and then, after Justin Morneau grounded out, Cuddyer hit his first long ball of the day, putting the Rockies on top 2-1. Corey Dickerson then singled and Rosario clubbed his 14th home run of the season, making it 4-1. It was the fourth time this year that the Rockies had hit at least three home runs in a single inning. No other major league team has accomplished the feat more than twice.
The Diamondbacks cut the lead to 4-3 in the second when Jake Lamb led off with a single and, one out later, was doubled to third by Didi Gregorius. Inciarte’s base hit to center scored both runners.
But the Rockies rebounded with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. D.J. LeMahieu led off by reaching on an error charged to second baseman Chris Owings and Arizona starter Chase Anderson walked his counterpart, Jordan Lyles, putting runners on first and second. Charlie Blackmon sacrificed the runners to second and third and Rutledge doubled them both home. After Morneau grounded out, Cuddyer belted his second home run of the game into the left field bleachers to put Colorado on top 8-3 and send Anderson to the showers. The Diamondbacks, despite being short in the bullpen, were forced to send Zeke Spruill into the game, and he recorded the final out of the inning.
The Diamondbacks fought back, scoring twice in the third when Pollock doubled and scored on Miguel Montero’s 12th home run of the season. Inciarte’s solo home run in the top of the fifth cut the Colorado lead to 8-6.
But that was as close as Arizona would get. Rafael Ynoa’s two-out single in the bottom of the fourth scored Cuddyer, who had singled two batters earlier, making it 9-6, and RBI singles by Ynoa and LeMahieu increased the lead to 11-6. The Rockies closed the scoring with three more tallies in the bottom of the seventh. Blackmon led off with his 17th home run of the season and Morneau doubled two batters later. After a passed ball advanced Morneau to third, Cuddyer capped his big day with his third home run of the contest, accounting for the 14-6 final.
Cuddyer celebrated his biggest game of the year less than two weeks after his third stint on the disabled list this season. The outfielder has missed nearly four months due to an assortment of injuries and his three-home run outburst came in just his 42nd appearance of the season.
