BUMGARNER WINS 20TH
Arias, Pagan Pace Giants Attack
CHICAGO, Aug. 21 (AP) – Madison Bumgarner became the first big league hurler to win 20 games this season, leading the San Francisco Giants to their fourth consecutive victory, 6-3 over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Bumgarner has now won five more games than any other National League pitcher and three more than any other big leaguer. Chris Tillman (17) of the Baltimore Orioles is the only other major leaguer with more than 15 wins.
San Francisco jumped out to a lead in the third inning. Joaquin Arias led off with a base hit and Bumgarner sacrificed him to second. Angel Pagan then doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring Arias with the game’s first run.
The Giants added to their lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, Adam Duvall reached on shortstop Javy Baez’s error. Joe Panik then doubled down the left field line, putting runners on second and third with one out. Arias followed with a base hit to left, scoring both runners to up the advantage to 3-0.
The Cubs got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth when Arismendy Alcantra homered into the chain link fence above the seats down the left field line and they cut the deficit to a single run in the fifth when Wellington Castillo led off with a double and scored two batters later on Matt Szczur’s two-bagger.
The Giants were still clinging to that 3-2 lead in the seventh when they added an insurance run on Pagan’s fourth home run of the season. San Francisco made it 5-2 in the eighth when Travis Ishikawa led off with a base hit and scored on Arias’ double—his fourth hit of the game—two batters later.
Alcantara’s second homer of the game cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the eighth but the Giants regained their three-run advantage in the ninth when Joe Panik drew a bases loaded walk off reliever Neil Ramirez.
Bumgarner was removed with the Giants ahead by two runs and turned the game over to the San Francisco bullpen. Jean Machi tossed a perfect seventh and though Juan Gutierrez was nicked for Alcantara’s eighth inning home run, he preserved the lead. The Cubs had the tying run at the plate in the eighth when Santiago Casilla replaced Jeremy Affeldt and retired pinch hitter Chris Coughlan to end the theat. Casilla then retired Chicago in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 16th save of the season.
Arias and Pagan combined for seven hits for San Francisco—including three doubles and a home run—and drove in five runs between them.
It's hard to believe that Bumgarner actually dropped two of his first three decisions this season. Since absorbing the loss to Colorado on April 11, the Giants lefty has won 19 of 22 decisions and with the victory over the Cubs has now defeated all 13 National League teams he has faced this year at least once. The only NL club Bumgarner hasn’t yet faced is Milwaukee; he’s currently on pace to oppose the Brewers when the two clubs are scheduled to meet at the end of August.
