11-RUN 4th KEYS ASTROS ROMP

Singleton Homers Twice, Drives in 5

NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (AP) – The Houston Astros tied a major league season high with an 11-run fourth inning and went on to pummel the New York Yankees 17-6 at Yankee Stadium.  Jon Singleton led the 21-hit attack with a pair of home runs and drove in five.  Dexter Fowler and Gregorio Petit also homered for the Astros who had the luxury of seeing every member of the lineup hit safely.  Seven of the nine Astros in the starting lineup amassed multiple hits.

The game started out quietly enough.  Houston took a 1-0 led in the second when Singleton hit his first home run of the game, a two-out solo shot.  The Yankees answered in their half of the third when Ichiro Suzuki singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Brett Gardner’s base hit.

But the Astros then blew the game wide open with the massive top of the fourt.  Facing New York starter Chris Capuano, Fowler and Castro opened the frame with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and third.  Matt Dominguez walked to load the bases and Singleton’s base hit to right advanced everyone 90 feet, with Fowler crossing home plate to make the score 2-1.  Jake Marisnick then grounded into a double play, scoring Castro, and leaving a runner on third with two outs.  The Yankees were only down by two runs at this point, and with one more out the game would remain competitive.  But that out didn’t come for a long, long time.  Petit singled through the box, plating Dominguez to make it 4-1.  Robbie Grossman followed with a single to left and Jose Altuve’s base hit scored Petit, leaving runners on first and second.  Chris Carter walked to load the bases for a second time in this inning and that was it for Capuano.  He was replaced by Chase Whitley, but the third out remained elusive.  Fowler drew a walk, which forced in Grossman to make it 6-1 and Castro’s second base hit of the inning drove home Altuve and Carter.  The hit parade continued with a Dominguez single scoring Fowler.  It was now 9-1.  Singleton then capped the scoring in the frame with a home run that reached the second deck in right field.  The three-run shot, Singleton’s second of the game and 12th of the season, made it 12-1 and effectively ended the game.

Houston added three more runs in the fifth.  Petit led off by reaching on an infield single and scored two batters later on Carter’s double to left.  Fowler than homered to right, giving the Astros a 15-1 lead.

The Yankees scored four consolation runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t nearly enough; Petit’s two-run home run in the eighth got half of those tallies back.  Ellsbury’s RBI-single in the bottom of the inning capped the scoring.

The Astros became only the third team this year to score 11 runs in an inning—Toronto and Arizona are the other two.  The 17 runs and 21 hits represent new club highs for the season.  Houston has now won five consecutive games.
