KERSHAW FANS 16 BUT DODGERS FALL IN 12
Brewers Parley 4 Unearned Runs to Victory
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16 (AP) – Clayton Kershaw struck out 16 batters but the Milwaukee Brewers outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in 12 innings at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw’s effort matched a single-game major league season high for strikeouts, tying Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers who fanned 16 Houston Astros on August 9 at Minute Maid Park. Darvish also settled for a no-decision. Two key errors were the undoing for the Dodgers as all four of Milwaukee’s runs were unearned.
The Dodgers took a 3-0 lead early in the game. A two-out, two-run rally in the first inning set the tone. Adrian Gonzalez drew a four-pitch walk from Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo. It was the first of three consecutive walks issued by the Milwaukee right-hander. After Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford drew free passes, the bases were loaded and Justin Turner made Gallardo pay, rifling a single into right field. Gonzalez and Kemp scored and while Crawford was advancing to third the Brewers nailed Turner trying to take second on the play, ending the inning.
Los Angeles added a run in the third when Yasiel Puig led off with his 13th home run of the year, giving the Dodgers a 3-0 advantage.
Gallardo settled down after that and the Dodgers were unable to add to their lead, but for some time, it appeared it wouldn’t matter. Kershaw coasted through the sixth inning with a four-hit shutout intact, having fanned 10 batters. At one point, Kershaw struck out six consecutive Brewers.
But in the top of the seventh, Milwaukee, improbably, drew even. After Jonathan Lucroy became Kershaw’s 11th strikeout victim, Ryan Braun drew a walk, the first of the game issued by Kershaw. And then, it happened. Kershaw induced a double play grounder off the bat of Aramis Ramirez, but Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas kicked it for an error. Instead of the inning being over, the Brewers had runners on first and second with one out. Kershaw struck out Kris Davis for the second out but then, Rickie Weeks worked ahead in the count 2-0 and drove a Kershaw fastball into the seats down the left field line for a three-run homer, tying the game. The sellout crowd of 56,342 watched in stunned silence as Weeks rounded the bases.
Kershaw remained in the game through the eighth and struck out the side, rounding out his 16 strikeout game.
After the Dodgers were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Kershaw returned to the mound in the top of the ninth to a raucous ovation, but after yielding consecutive singles to Braun and Ramirez to open the frame, the left-hander was replaced by Pedro Baez, who retired Davis and Weeks, but walked Mark Reynolds on four pitches to load the bases. Baez worked ahead of Elian Herrera 0-2 and then ended the threat by inducing a pop fly for the third out.
Mild threats by the Dodgers in the 9th and 10th innings were turned aside and the next scoring opportunity came in the top of the 12th. With one out, pinch hitter Jean Segura lined a base hit to center off Brandon League, who was in his second inning of relief. Segura stole second and when A.J. Ellis’ throw caromed into center field, Segura advanced to third on the error. Herrera then bounced a single through the drawn-in infield, scoring Segura. League avoided further damage, but the Brewers now led 4-3.
Francisco Rodriguez came on for Milwaukee in the bottom of the 12th and immediately ran into trouble, yielding a lead-off double to Adrian Gonzalez, who was replaced on first base by pinch runner Scott Van Slyke. Kemp then drew a walk, putting the potential winning run on base with no outs. But Rodriguez bared down, worked ahead of Crawford and then got him to ground into a double play, with Van Slyke taking third. Rodriguez then retired Turner on a grounder to short to end the game, recording his 38th save of the season in the process.
