BUMGARNER WINS 19TH, FANS 14
Giants Move Into Tie for 2nd Wildcard
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 (AP) – Madison Bumgarner won his major league leading 19th game of the season, striking out 14 batters in the process, leading the San Francisco Giants past the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 at AT&T Park. Bumgarner worked within two outs of his fourth complete game of the year, but with the tying run on deck was removed in favor of Santiago Casilla, who preserved the shutout to earn his 13th save of the season. Bumgarner’s opponent, Cole Hamels, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but it all came apart for him as the Giants scored all four of their runs in that frame.
Bumgarner faced only one serious threat prior to the ninth inning. In the top of the second, Marlon Byrd led off with a base hit and was doubled to third by Carlos Ruiz. But Bumgarner worked out of trouble by retiring Darrin Ruf on a shallow fly to left and then striking out both Cody Asche and Hamels to end the inning.
Hamels was cruising along through five. The only baserunner he allowed was Angel Pagan, who walked leading off the fourth. Pagan stole second, but when Hunter Pence flied to right, Pagan attempted to tag and advance to third and he was gunned down by Byrd.
But in the sixth, San Francisco seized control of the game once and for all. Joe Panik led off with the first Giants hit, a triple into the right field corner. Brandon Crawford reached on an infield single, a line shot that ate up second baseman Chase Utley, scoring Panik to make it 1-0. Bumgarner sacrificed Crawford to second and when Pagan popped to second for out number two, it appeared as though Hamels might work out of further trouble. But Pence reached on the second infield hit of the inning, putting runners on first and third, and Buster Posey followed by lining a single to center, scoring Crawford to make it 2-0, with Pence advancing to third. Pablo Sandoval then reached on the third infield hit of the frame, scoring Pence, and Michael Morse lined a double to right, plating Posey to give San Francisco a 4-0 lead. Adam Duvall popped to short for the third out, but the damage had been done.
After extinguishing the second inning threat, Bumgarner was in full control. In addition to striking out at least one batter in every inning, the Ruf flyout in the second began a string of 21 consecutive Philadelphia batters retired. The Phillies grew increasingly frustrated, culminating in Ryan Howard’s ejection for arguing balls and strikes after being rung up to lead off the seventh. The consecutive batters retired streak didn’t end until Ben Revere singled to lead off the top of the ninth. Seemingly undaunted, Bumgarner came back to fan Jimmy Rollins for his 14th strikeout, but Utley followed by drawing a walk, putting the tying run in the on-deck circle. With a pitch count that had grown in excess of 120, Giants manager Bruce Bochy had seen enough, and called on Casilla, who induced pinch hitter Domonic Brown to ground into a game-ending double play.
The win, coupled with Cincinnati’s loss to Colorado, moves the Giants into a tie with the Reds for the second wildcard slot in the National League.
