EATON, DUNN KEY CHISOX MAULING OF M’S

Sox Club 5 HRs; Quintana Wins 10th

SEATTLE, Aug. 8 (AP) – Adam Eaton slashed five hits and Adam Dunn homered twice—he now has five long balls in his last five games—to lead the Chicago White Sox past the Seattle Mariners 16-5 at Safeco Field.  The 16-run outburst marks a new club season high, besting the previous mark of 15 set on July 22 in a drubbing of the Kansas City Royals.  The White Sox belted five home runs in the game, tying the team high on the year.

Eaton and Dunn put Chicago on the board in the top of the first.  Eaton led off the game with a base hit and, two outs later, Dunn deposited a Hisashi Iwakuma pitch into the Mariners bullpen in right field for a 2-0 White Sox lead.  The Mariners got a run back in the bottom of the second inning when Chris Denorfia’s double play grounder scored Kendrys Morales.

The White Sox expanded their lead in the third with Eaton and Dunn doing their thing again.  This time Eaton led off with a double and trotted home on Dunn’s second home run of the game, and 23rd of the year, to give Chicago a 4-1 advantage.  In the fourth, singles by Gordon Beckham, Alejandro de Aza and Eaton made it 5-1.

After Kyle Seager’s fourth inning sacrifice fly pulled Seattle to within three runs the White Sox seized firm control over the game.  In the top of the fifth, Jose Abreu led off with his 26th home run of the season and later in the frame de Aza’s ground out plated Dayan Viciedo to give Chicago a 7-2 lead.

The White Sox broke the game wide open with five more runs in the sixth.  Alexi Ramirez’s solo home run with one out got the scoring started and consecutive walks to Abreu and Dunn were followed by a Viciedo single to load the bases.  Connor Gillespie then cleared the sacks with a drive into the right field seats, the third grand slam of the season for Chicago and the first for Gillespie.  It was now 12-2 and the game was all but over.  The scoring, however, was not.

The White Sox tallied four more times in the seventh to seize a massive 16-2 advantage.  The Mariners managed three consolation runs over the final three innings, highlighted by Mike Zunino’s 16th home run of the year, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Jose Quintana picked up the victory, his 10th of the year, with seven solid innings of work.

The Mariners remain in second place in the AL West and currently hold the top wildcard slot in the American League, but have seen their lead over the Los Angeles Angels drop to two games following the Halos extra inning victory over the Boston Red Sox.
