KING FELIX LOSES NO-NO IN 9TH FOR 2ND TIME
M’s Win Game in 11th on Unearned Run
SEATTLE, Aug. 5 (AP) – Logan Morrison’s base hit—his third safety of the game—scored Kyle Seager with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in an interleague game at Safeco Field. Mariners starter Felix Hernandez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning for the second time this year and has come up short on the bid on both occasions. On June 13 Hernandez surrendered a two-out triple in the top of the ninth to Rougned Odor of the Texas Rangers in a game Seattle won, 2-0. On this occasion, Hernandez ended up with a no-decision.
Hernandez and Braves starter Alex Wood matched goose eggs until the bottom of the fifth when the Mariners broke the scoreless deadlock. Chris Denorfia, recently acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres, led off the frame with a base hit to left and Morrison followed with double off the right field wall, putting runners on second and third with one out. With the infield back, Mike Zunino’s roller to short scored Denorfia to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Chris Taylor then reached on an infield hit, putting runners on the corners with one out and, after Austin Jackson struck out, Dustin Ackley grounded a single into right field, scoring Morrison to give the Mariners a 2-0 advantage.
Hernandez held Atlanta at bay through eight innings. Tommy LaStella reached on an error on Morrison with one out in the first but never advanced. Hernandez retired seven straight batters and then walked Emilio Bonifacio with two outs in the third, but stranded him when LaStella fouled out. That started a string of 15 consecutive hitters retired which was snapped when Gerald Laird drew a two-out walk in the eighth. But Hernandez retired Anrdrelton Simmons on a fly to center to end the inning.
The Mariners were still clinging to a 2-0 lead as the game reached the top of the ninth. Hernandez retired Bonifacio on a pop to second for the first out but LaStella walked. That brought Freddie Freeman to the plate. Hernandez worked ahead of Freeman 1-2 but then hung a slider and Freeman crushed it. The no-doubt homer clipped the façade of the second level in right field and the game was tied. Hernandez retired the next two batters without incident, but the game was now headed to the bottom of the nnth. Freeman’s monster home run would prove to be the only hit the Braves would manage in the entire game.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th. After Kendrys Morales flied out, Seager reached first when Simmons booted his ground ball. Endy Chaves was retired on a roller back to the mound, but Seager was able to advance to second. Morrison followed with a base hit through the box, scoring Seager with the game-winning run.
The Mariners are now 17-8 in one-run games this season at Safeco Field and have won seven consecutive extra inning contests overall dating back to late May. Seattle last lost an extra inning game on May 26 against the Los Angeles Angels.
Big league pitchers have taken no-hitters into the ninth inning six times this year and Hernandez is the only one to do so more than once.
There have been only two extra inning games this season where one club has amassed only one run and the Braves have been involved both times. On May 9 they held the Chicago Cubs to a lone safety in a 12-inning 1-0 Atlanta victory at Turner Field.
Seattle has one-hit its opponents four times thus far this year, the most of any team in the major league. Atlanta (3) is the only other club to accomplish the feat more than twice.
