MADBUM WINS 18TH; 10th ‘W’ IN LAST 11 ROAD STARTS
Posey Doubles, Homers in Support of Battery Mate
NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (AP) – Madison Bumgarner allowed one run over eight strong innings, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field. It was the major league leading 18th win of the year for the left-hander, four more than any other big league pitcher. Bumgarner improved to 10-2 in road games and 10 of his last 11 road decisions have been victories. The win was just the third in the last 11 contests for the Giants, who have slipped 4 ½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West but retain the NL’s second wildcard slot.
Bumgarner continues his emphatic push for the NL Cy Young Award. He has now started 24 games on the season and has yet to allow more than four runs in any contest, the longest such streak in the major leagues this year. Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals hasn’t allowed more than four runs in any of his 22 starts this season.
Bumgarner and the Giants fell behind in the second inning when, with two outs, Mets center fielder Juan Lagares doubled into the left field corner and scored on Wilmer Flores’ base hit, giving New York a 1-0 lead.
San Francisco took the lead in the top of the fourth against Mets starter Bartolo Colon. Buster Posey led off with a double to left and, after Colon retired Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Belt, Michael Morse lined a two-bagger off the left field wall, scoring Posey to tie the game, and Gregor Blanco laced the third Giants double of the inning, plating Morse to make it 2-1. The Giants added an insurance run in the eighth when Posey belted his 16th home run of the season, giving the Giants a 3-1 lead.
Bumgarner was in command throughout, holding New York to just four hits without walking a batter. He retired 12 straight Mets after the Flores double and allowed only two more baserunners over the remainder of his time on the mound, none of them advancing past first base.
Bumgarner was removed as part of a double switch after the top of the ninth and Sergio Romo replaced him on the mound. Romo had his change-up working and pitched around a one-out walk to pinch hitter Bobby Abreu, retiring two batters on strikes to earn his 21st save of the season.
The loss snapped the Mets four-game winning streak, the team’s longest since the first half of May.
