PETIT STYMIES PHILS
Blanco's HR Accounts for Game's Only Runs
PHILADELPHIA, July 22 (AP) - Yusmeiro Petit fired a complete game three-hit shutout as the San Francisco Giants slipped past the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Petit struck out 11 batters, matching a season high originally set on May 5 in a six-inning outing--a victory--at Pittsburgh. Petit has now made six starts this season, but this was his first since a May 31 loss at St. Louis. The effort by Petit against the Phillies marks just the 10th time this major league season that a pitcher has thrown a complete game shutout while also reaching double digits in strikeouts. Petit is the first Giants starter to accomplish the feat.
The Giants scored all the runs they would need--or get--in the top of the second. Michael Morse was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Gregor Blanco followed with his third home run of the season. The ball landed in the right field seats and gave San Francisco a 2-0 lead. The Giants never advanced another runner past second base.
Petit's counterpart, Philadelphia starter Roberto Hernandez, had a strong outing himself, going seven innings while allowing just two runs on four hits. But Petit was even better. The only real scoring threat the Phillies had came in the bottom of the second. Ryan Howard led off with a sharp single to center field and Marlon Byrd followed with a base hit through the middle. But Petit induced Grady Sizemore to pop to second for the first out, retired Cody Asche on a fly to right and fanned Cameron Rupp to end the inning.
Petit surrendered just three singles to the Phillies and walked two batters, though one of those was an intentional free pass to Howard in the third. After issuing a base on balls to Rupp to lead off the fifth, Petit retired the final 15 Philadelphia batters in order. He seemed to strengthen as the game moved along, striking out seven of the last 13 hitters he faced.
It was the third time this season that a Giants pitcher had fanned 11 batters in a game--the club high for the year. Petit has done so twice in six starts. The only other San Francisco hurler to match him is Madison Bumgarner, the National League leader in wins, who whiffed 11 Colorado Rockies in a 10-1 victory at Coors Field on April 22.
