ABREU HITS 3 HRS IN ROUT OF ASTROS

Dunn Amasses 5 Hits

CHICAGO, July 18 (AP) - Jose Abreu homered three times and Adam Dunn went 5-for-5 as the Chicago White Sox whipped the Houston Astros 10-4 at U.S. Cellular Field.  Abreu, who tied a club season high by driving in five runs, became the third major league player this season to hit three home runs in a game, joining Victor Martinez of Detroit and Jayson Werth of Washington.  Dunn is the 11th major leaguer this season to amass five hits in a nine-inning game, the high water mark of the year.   White Sox starter Jose Quintana took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but surrendered a two-out RBI double to Jonathan Singleton.  Quintana recorded the final out of the inning but was lifted after six complete, having thrown more than 100 pitches.

The White Sox made quick work of Astros starter Scott Feldman.  After Abreu gave Chicago the lead with a two-out solo home run in the first, the White Sox broke the game open in the bottom of the second and sent Feldman to the showers in the process.  Connor Gillespie doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Gordon Beckham's fly out to center.  When Alejandro de Aza's fly to shallow right failed to score Gillespie it appeared that Feldman might avoid damage in the inning but Tyler Flowers grounded a double over the third base bag, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead.  Adam Eaton's infield single put runners on the corners and Alexi Ramirez singled through the box, scoring Flowers and advancing Eaton to third.  Abreu followed with his second homer of the game, putting the White Sox on top 6-0.  When Dunn lined a single to right-center Feldman was lifted in favor of Jake Buchanan who finally recorded the third out.

The game was never really in doubt after that.  The Astros cut the deficit to 6-1 on Singleton's sixth inning double but Dunn's two-run double in the bottom of the frame made it 8-1.  Singleton's solo homer in the seventh brought Houston to within six runs and Robbie Grossman's two-bagger in the eighth scored Jason Castro and Chris Carter, cutting the Chicago lead to 8-4, but Flowers led off the bottom of the eighth with his 11th home run of the year and, three batters later, Abreu completed his big game with his third home run of the day, this one to the opposite field off Josh Zeid, capping the scoring.
