DODGERS EKE OUT WIN OVER PADS IN 10TH

Game's Only Run is Unearned

LOS ANGELES, July 11 (AP) - Brooks Conrad's error in the bottom of the tenth inning allowed Carl Crawford to score the only run of the contest as the Los Angeles Dodgers outlasted the San Diego Padres 1-0 before a sellout crowd at Dodger Stadium.  Los Angeles had managed only two hits through nine frames and San Diego collected only three safeties, with just two of them coming in the first nine innings.  Starters Dan Haren and Jesse Hahn each tossed seven scoreless frames, but neither figured in the final decision.

The Padres--the worst offensive team in the major leagues this year--never got a runner past second base in the entire game.  In fact, neither team advanced a runner past second until the bottom of the 10th inning.  Haren held San Diego hitless through four innings but Jake Goebbert led off the fifth with a base hit and advanced to second on a passed ball charged to Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis.  Haren went on to walk Conrad, putting runners on first and second with no outs.  But the scoring chance unraveled quickly.  Will Venable popped up a sacrifice attempt that was caught by third baseman Juan Uribe.  Alexi Amarista then popped to second and Hahn rolled out weakly to first to end the threat.  It was the best chance the Padres had to score all game.

The Dodgers had more baserunners, a function of Hahn's control issues--he walked five batters--and sloppy defense on the part of the Padres, but no more success scoring.  Los Angeles put runners on first and second to open the bottom of the second inning when Matt Kemp singled and stole second base followed by a free pass drawn by Scott Van Slyke.  But, like the Padres in the fifth, the would-be rally crumbled quickly.  Uribe struck out, Miguel Rojas hit into a fielder's choice and Drew Butera fanned to end the inning.

After Haren was removed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth, Paul Maholm, Kenley Jansen and J.P. Howell each tossed a scoreless inning.  Alexander Torres and Blaine Boyer combined for a pair of perfect innings after Hahn was removed.

In the bottom of the tenth, Tim Stauffer took over on the mound for San Diego and immediately ran into trouble.  Crawford led off by reaching on a pinch hit infield single and Hanley Ramirez, also pinch hitting, laced a base hit down the left field line, advancing Crawford to third.  That brought Dee Gordon to the plate and the Padres pulled the infield in.  The tactic appeared to work when Gordon bounced a two-hopper directly at Conrad, but the ball went right through his legs.  The miscue allowed Crawford to dance home and the Dodgers and the big crowd celebrated the victory.

It was the 16th time this season that the Padres have been shut out, the most in the big leagues this year.  The Dodgers have been the beneficiaries of four of those blankings, and it was the second time in as many days that Los Angeles has whitewashed San Diego.  Clayton Kershaw fired a three-hit complete game shutout against the Padres on July 10.  The Dodgers have now defeated the Padres five consecutive times and are 7-1 against San Diego overall this season.
