LEAKE 1-HITS PADS
Reds Eke Out Win Despite 16 Ks
SAN DIEGO, July 1 (AP) - Mike Leake fired the third complete game one-hitter of the major league season, leading the Cincinnati Reds past the San Diego Padres 1-0 at Petco Park. The Padres--by far the worst offensive team in either league this year--have now been shut out 13 times, tying the Arizona Diamondbacks for the big league high. San Diego wasted an overpowering pitching performance by a trio of hurlers--starter Ian Kennedy and relievers Kevin Quackenbush and Joaquin Benoit--who combined to strike out 16 Reds batters. It was just the seventh time this season that a team has struck out more than 15 times in a nine-inning game.
The contest's only run came right off the bat, accomplished by the first three hitters in the top of the first inning. Billy Hamilton led off the game with a double to right and Todd Frazier followed by drawing a walk from Kennedy, putting runners on first and second. Joey Votto then cracked a double off the wall in left-center field, scoring Hamilton and chasing Frazier to third. The Reds appeared poised for a big inning. But Kennedy stiffened. With the infield in, Brandon Phillips grounded to short and Alexi Amarista cut Frazier down at the plate, leaving runners on the corners. Jay Bruce popped out to shallow left, with the runners holding, and Kennedy fanned Devin Mesoraco to end the inning.
Cincinnati barely showed a pulse offensively for the rest of the game. Kennedy retired 11 straight batters before yielding a lead-off single to Skip Schumaker in the fifth, but after the first inning the Reds managed only two more hits and never advanced another runner past second base.
If the Cincinnati offense was stymied, the Padres hitters were virtually non-existent. Leake took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Irving Falu led off with a clean single through the middle. But San Diego could never manage another hit. Leake walked Seth Smith in the first, but then retired the next nine consecutive batters before issuing a base on balls to Chase Headley in the fourth. Headley was erased on a double play grounder. After Falu's hit Leake was on full cruise control, retiring the final 12 hitters he faced. He needed only 92 pitches to complete the game, the second lowest total in a complete game this season. James Shields of the Kansas City Royals tossed only 84 pitches in a complete game five-hit shutout victory over the Colorado Rockies on May 13.
