FREEMAN KEYS BRAVES IN NIGHTCAP OF DH SWEEP
Braves 1B Totals 5 Hits Including 2 HRs
PHILADELPHIA, June 28 (AP) - Freddie Freeman equaled big league season highs with five hits and 12 total bases, leading the Atlanta Braves to an 8-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the second game of a day-night doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park. The Braves won the matinee as well, eking out a 5-4 win. Freeman became the ninth major leaguer thus far this season to accumulate five hits and the fifth to reach 12 total bases, but is the only player to do both--and in the same game, to boot. Two of Freeman's hits were home runs, half of the four that Atlanta belted off Phillies starter Sean O'Sullivan, who was making his season's debut.
Freeman's first long ball was a two-out solo shot in the top of the first, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. Philadelphia countered with a pair of runs off Braves starter David Hale in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer off the bat of Ryan Howard.
But while Hale righted the ship after a rocky opening inning, shutting the Phillies out over the next six frames before departing for a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth, the Braves pressured O'Sullivan throughout. They tied the game in the third on Jordan Schafer's solo homer and then blew the contest open during a four-run fifth. Schafer doubled with one out and broke the 2-2 deadlock when Andrelton Simmons singled him home. Simmons stole second and advanced to third when Cameron Rupp's throw sailed into center field. Freeman's single through the box brought Simmons home, giving Atlanta a 4-2 lead. Justin Upton walked, putting runners on first and second and Ryan Doumit followed with a base hit to center, scoring Freeman, with Upton and Doumit advancing to third and second respectively on the throw to the plate. Chris Johnson then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, which brought home Upton, putting the Braves ahead 6-2.
Atlanta capped the scoring in the seventh when Freeman and Upton belted back-to-back homers opening the inning.
Gus Schlosser mopped up for the Braves with a pair of scoreless frames.
Freeman finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. After the home run in his first at bat, he doubled in the third, had the RBI single in the fifth, hit his second homer in the seventh and singled again in the eighth. Freeman became the fifth major league player this year to go 5-for-5 in a game.
