DAVIS' SCORELESS STREAK ENDS AFTER 34 APPEARANCES
Dyson Provides Walkoff as Royals Rally in 9th
KANSAS CITY, June 25 (AP) - Royals reliever Wade Davis saw his string of consecutive innings end as he allowed a run for the first time this season but Kansas City broke a tie in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jarrod Dyson's base hit scored Pedro Ciriaco with the wining run in a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Kauffman Stadium. Davis had gone 34-2/3 scoreless frames--the longest streak in the big leagues this year--over 34 appearances before allowing a run--and blowing a save in the process--in the top of the eighth inning.
The game was a tight contest throughout. Kansas City starter James Shields and Los Angeles starter Dan Haren matched scoreless innings through five, but the Royals finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth. Brent Hayes led off with a double and, after Lorenzo Cain grounded to short, Eric Hosmer's two-bagger plated Hayes with the game's first run.
The Dodgers tied the contest in the seventh. Matt Kemp led off with a single and, one out later, advanced to third on Justin Turner's double into the left field corner. The Royals brought the corners in, but pinch hitter Clint Robinson grounded to short, allowing Kemp to score, evening things at a run apiece.
Kansas City regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Moustakas doubled to open the frame, and was replaced at second by Ciriaco. Alcides Escobar sacrificed the runner to third and Dyson grounded a single through the right side of the drawn in infield to give the Royals a 2-1 advantage.
That set the table for Davis' entry into the game, in the bottom of the eighth. Uncharacteristically, he walked the lead-off batter, Dee Gordon. It was just the fifth free pass Davis had issued all season to date and the first time all year that he'd walked the first batter he faced in a game. Gordon promptly stole second, his major league leading 31st theft of the season. Yasiel Puig sacrificed Gordon to third and Adrian Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Gordon to knot the contest at two.
The score was still tied as the game headed to the bottom of the ninth. Ciriaco, who had stayed in the game after pinch running for Moustakas, led off by grounding a single to center off Brandon League. Following a now well-worn pattern, Ciriaco stole second and advanced to third on Escobar's second sacrifice bunt of the game. Dyson was next and, again, singled past a drawn in infield, this time to left, scoring Ciriaco and giving the Royals the win.
