BACK-TO-BACK 2-BAGGERS KEY GIANTS WALKOFF

Pads Drop 9th Straight

SAN FRANCISCO, June 24 (AP) - Consecutive doubles off the bats of Pablo Sandoval and Michael Morse in the bottom of the ninth inning snapped a 1-all tie and gave the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres at AT&T Park.  The loss was the ninth straight for the Padres, just two shy of the major league high on the year set by the Houston Astros back in the first half of April.  San Diego has scored two runs or fewer in eight of its last nine games and 43 of the club's 78 games to date, most in the major leagues.  The Padres' record in those contests is 8-35.

The Padres had three runners thrown out trying to steal in the game, the second time this year that's happened to the team.  Only one other club in the major leagues has had three runners caught stealing in a single contest this season:  the Colorado Rockies, on June 17, in a 2-1 loss at Dodger Stadium.

Neither starting pitcher received a decision in this game, despite the fact that both pitched well.  San Diego's Jesse Hahn allowed only one run in seven innings, surrendering just four hits while striking out eight.  Tim Hudson of the Giants was clipped for a single run in eight innings of work.

San Francisco got on the board first, pushing a run across in the bottom of the third.  Gregory Blanco singled with one out and stole second.  Hunter Pence followed with a base hit to center, scoring Blanco to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.

The Padres got the equalizer off Hudson in the seventh.  Chase Headley led off with a double and advanced to third on Yasmani Grandal's grounder to first.  The Giants pulled the infield in with Jake Goebbert--who already had two hits in the game--coming to the plate, and Goebbert's weak grounder to second baseman Joe Panik couldn't plate the run.  Cameron Maybin, however, came through with a two-out single to left, scoring Headley to tie the game.

Neither team scored in the eighth, but the Padres put a threat together in the ninth against the San Francisco bullpen.  With Javier Lopez on the mound, Seth Smith lined a one-out double to right-center and Headley drew a free pass, putting runners on first and second.  Sergio Romo was summoned from the Giants pen to deal with Grandal and got him on another grounder to first, with the runners moving up 90 feet.  The lefty swinging Goebbert was walked intentionally, loading the bases, so Romo could deal with the right-handed Maybin and the strategy paid off when the San Diego center fielder rolled into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

The Giants wasted no time putting an end to matters in the bottom of the ninth.  With Blaine Boyer on the hill for a second inning, in an attempt to spare an exhausted Padres relief corps, Sandoval ripped the first pitch he saw into the gap in left-center for a double.  Juan Perez ran for Sandoval and scored the game-winner when Morse laced an 0-1 breaking ball into the left-field corner.

It was the third straight win for San Francisco; the Giants remain in second place in the NL West, just 1-1/2 games behind the Dodgers.
