K.C.'s Davis Extends Scoreless Streak
KANSAS CITY, June 21 (AP) - Chris Young tossed six shutout innings and Robinson Cano and Stefen Romero drove in a pair of runs apiece as the Seattle Mariners cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The win was the 10th in a row for the Mariners, the longest winning streak of the year in the major leagues to date. Wade Davis recorded a perfect 8th inning for the Royals, extending his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 33.2, matching Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres for the longest such streak this season. Davis has now appeared in 33 games this season without allowing a run.
The Mariners broke the game open in the second inning with four runs off Kanas City starter Jason Vargas. John Buck led off with a base hit and was forced at second on Kyle Seager's fielder's choice grounder. But Romero followed with a triple into the right field corner, scoring Seager to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Jesus Montero's single to left brought home Seager to make it 2-0 and, after Brad Miller struck out, consecutive base hits off the bats of James Jones, Cole Gillespie and Cano tallied two more runs.
The Mariners added a run in the third when Buck led off with a base hit, moved to third on Seager's single and scored on Romero's infield hit.
Two more runs in the fifth capped the Seattle scoring. Montero singled and Miller and Jones walked to load the bases. A double play grounder off Gillespie's bat brought home Montero and a wild pitch scored Miller.
Young, meanwhile, calmly stymied the Royals. After retiring the first 10 batters he faced, he walked two and surrendered two harmless singles while striking out three.
The Royals finally got on the board in the eighth when Jarrod Dyson led off with a base hit and scored three batters later on Billy Butler's two-out double. It would be Kansas City's only run.
