KERSHAW WINS GAME FOR DODGERS--WITH HIS BAT
L.A. Beats Rocks in 19-Inning Marathon
LOS ANGELES, June 17 (AP) - Clayton Kershaw came off the bench as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 19th inning and lined a base hit to left, driving in Justin Turner with the winning run as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 2-1 at Dodger Stadium. The game is the longest of the major league season to date, eclipsing the Houston Astros 6-4 win over the Oakland A’s on April 25 at Minute Maid Park by one inning. And featured brilliant pitching by both clubs. The two starters--Zack Greinke for the Dodgers, Jhoulys Chacin for the Rockies--each allowed one run in seven innings of work. Both bullpens then went on to toss 11 innings of shutout ball apiece. The Dodgers extended that to a 12th scoreless inning of relief but Nick Masset of the Rockies finally succumbed, leading to Kershaw's heroics with the bat.
The Rockies scored first, pushing a run across in the third inning off Greinke. D.J. LeMahieu led off with a base hit and was sacrificed to second by Chacin. Charlie Blackmon followed by lining a single to right-center, scoring LeMahieu to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.
The Dodgers countered with a run in the fifth off Chacin. Matt Kemp opened the frame with a double to left and moved to third on Andre Ethier's grounder to short. A.J. Ellis followed with a double to the gap in left-center, plating Kemp to tie the game at one.
Ethier tripled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Chacin closed out his effort by retiring Ellis on a ground ball to end the threat.
Things remained quiet thereafter until the bottom of the 12th, when Los Angeles botched a golden opportunity to win the game. Tommy Kahnle, the fourth Rockies reliever, was in his second inning of work, and he walked Hanley Ramirez on four pitches to open the inning. Yasiel Puig followed with a base hit to right, putting runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and Adrian Gonzalez was walked intentionally to load the bases. When Kahnle fell behind Kemp 3-1, it appeared that the game was poised to come to an end, but on that 3-1 pitch Kemp grounded a one-hopper to third baseman Charlie Culberson who fired to the plate to force Ramirez. The relay to first was in time to double up Kemp and suddenly the Rockies had a life line. With runners on second and third and two outs Kahnle struck out Jamie Romak to complete the Houdini act.
The Dodgers had another good chance to win the game in the 17th inning. Colorado reliever Franklin Morales walked Gonzalez and Kemp to open the inning. Romak then sacrificed the runners to second and third and Ellis was hit with a pitch to load the bases, bringing Turner to the plate. He promptly fouled to first for the second out and pinch hitter Drew Butera, the last position player available on the Los Angeles bench, lined to second to end the inning.
Morales walked two more batters with one out in the bottom of the 18th before retiring Gonzalez on a fly ball and giving way to Masset, who struck out Kemp to end the inning.
The Dodgers bullpen was impeccable. Seven relievers combined to allow only six hits and walk two in 12 innings of work while fanning nine.
In the bottom of the 19th, the game finally came to an end. Masset retired Romak on a ground ball to open the inning but Ellis walked again and Turner followed by lining a first pitch double to left-center, putting runners on second and third. J.P. Howell was due to bat, but Dodgers manager Don Mattingly reached deep onto the bench for Kershaw. With the infield drawn in, Kershaw picked out a 2-2 pitch and lined a clean single to left, scoring Ellis with the game-winning run.
