Hahn Strikes Out 7 Straight
NEW YORK, June 14 (AP) - San Diego Padres pitchers struck out 17 New York Mets batters and the Padres went on to a 1-0 victory at Citi Field. It was San Diego's third consecutive win. Padres right-hander Jesse Hahn, making only his second start of the season, fanned 11 in six innings, including seven batters in a row. The seven straight punch outs ties a high for individual pitchers in the major leagues this far this season. The 17 strikeouts in a nine-inning contest is the second highest in a big league game this year; the Los Angeles Dodgers struck out 18 Chicago White Sox hitters on June 2 at Dodger Stadium.
The pitching-dominant contest featured a combined total of only one run and five hits. The five combined safeties ties a low mark for the season, previously set twice.
The game's only run came in the top of the very first inning. Will Venable led off by drawing a free pass from Mets starter Zack Wheeler, and then stole his seventh base of the season. After failing to get a bunt down to advance Venable to third, Everth Cabrera grounded a 1-2 pitch into the hole on the left side of the infield. Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada kept the ball in the infield with a backhanded dive but had no play anywhere. The infield single put runners on the corners with no outs. Seth Smith's topper to short allowed Venable to score and Wheeler worked out of further difficulty in the first, but the Padres had a 1-0 lead that would never change.
Wheeler, in fact, kept the Padres completely subdued from that point on, allowing only one more hit--a harmless one-out single off the bat of Cameron Maybin in the second, and one more walk--to Venable again in the third--in six innings of work, striking out six batters. After the opening frame, San Diego never advanced a baserunner past second.
Hahn was overpowering. He surrendered consecutive two-out singles to David Wright and Bobby Abreu in the first inning, but held the Mets hitless thereafter. In fact, New York didn't manage a safety after the first inning against any of the Padres five pitchers. After Abreu's line drive base hit to right-center in the first inning Hahn retired Lucas Duda on a routine fly ball to left. That fly out was the first of 11 consecutive batters retired, the last seven of them on strikes. After getting the seventh consecutive punch out--Chris Young, to open the fifth--Hahn walked Taylor Teagarden on a 3-2 pitch to snap the string. He then retired the next five hitters in a row, the last two on strikes.
Carlos Torres replaced Hahn to begin the seventh and walked pinch hitter Eric Campbell to open the inning before retiring Duda on a fly to center. Dale Thayer took over for Torres and got Young on a fly to left and struck out Teagarden. Joaquin Benoit took the mound for the Padres to start the eighth and walked Matt den Dekker to lead off the inning. den Dekker stole second, but Benoit struck out pinch hitter Curtis Granderson and then Tejada. Benoit was called for a balk while pitching to Daniel Murphy, advancing den Dekker to third, but came back to fan Murphy to escape damage. Huston Street came on and retired the Mets in order in the ninth, striking out two batters, to earn his 17th save of the season.
