RYU, 3 RELIEVERS 1-HIT REDS
Cueto Allows 2 Unearned Runs in CG 'L'
CINCINNATI, June 11 (AP) - Hyun-Jin Ryu and a trio of relievers retired 26 consecutive batters to conclude the game, holding the Reds to a single first inning safety, as the Los Angeles Dodgers slipped past Cincinnati at Great American Ballpark. Todd Frazier's one out single off Ryu in the opening frame was the only Reds baserunner of the entire game. The 28 batters faced by Dodgers pitchers matched the single game low of the season, previously set by Jonathan Niese of the New York Mets when he no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies on May 11. The 26 consecutive hitters retired by pitchers on one team in a single game is the longest such streak this year.
The Reds wasted an excellent start by Johnny Cueto, who allowed just two unearned runs on five hits during a complete game effort that included 10 strikeouts. Ryu fanned eight batters in his seven innings of work while Los Angeles relievers added two more punch outs.
The Dodgers scored the game's only two runs in the top of the third. After Drew Butera struck out to open the frame, Ryu dribbled a roller back to the mound that Cueto muffed for an error. That was to prove his undoing because Dee Gordon singled to right, advancing Ryu to second, and Chone Figgins flared a double down the left field line, scoring Ryu and advancing Gordon to third. Yasiel Puig's weak grounder to second scored Gordon with the second run of the inning before Cueto ended the frame by inducing Adrian Gonzalez to fly to left.
Cueto allowed only two more baserunners the entire game, and concluded the contest by retiring the final 11 Dodgers he faced, but the damage had been done.
The Reds scarcely hit a loud foul after Frazier's first inning base hit. Ryu retired the next 20 batters he faced before being lifted after seven innings. J.P. Howell replaced him, retired Joey Votto, then himself was removed in favor of Brian Wilson, who retired all three hitters he faced before giving way to Kenley Jansen. Jansen needed only six pitches to record the final two outs and register his 16th save of the season.
