TIGERS CLIP CHISOX IN RARE DOUBLE CG
Quickest Game of the Season Features No BBs
CHICAGO, June 9 (AP) - Rick Porcello tossed a three-hit complete game shutout, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. White Sox starter Hector Noesi was almost as good, allowing just one run on six hits in a complete game effort of his own. It was the first time in this major league season that both starting pitchers threw nine complete innings and only the second time this year that both starting pitchers were credited with complete games. Dallas Kuechel of the Astros and Jeremy Guthrie of the Royals both were credited with a complete game in Houston's 1-0 victory on April 16, but Guthrie only threw eight innings.
The game's only run came in the third. Austin Jackson slashed a lead-off double to right and advanced to third on Alex Avila's grounder to first. Eugenio Suarez followed with a base hit to left, scoring Jackson to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The White Sox never advanced a runner past first base against Porcello, who was in complete control throughout the contest. He allowed three harmless singles and hit a batter, needing only 98 pitches to complete the game. Chicago never managed to get a lead-off batter on base in any of the nine innings of the game, and the last eight batters Porcello faced were retired consecutively.
Noesi was nearly as effective. The Jackson double was the only extra base hit he allowed. Jackson was the only Detroit baserunner to advance past first in the entire contest and Noesi threw only 97 pitches in the complete game effort.
The two pitchers issued no walks; it was only the 11th time all season that a game has been played without at least one base on balls. Four of those 11 games have involved the White Sox and all four have taken place in the last two weeks.
The game wrapped in a lightning fast one hour and 58 minutes, the first big league contest this season to be completed in less than two hours.
