SCHERZER HELPS TIGERS SNAP SKID

Cabrera Accounts for Game's Only Run

SEATTLE, June 1 (AP) - Max Scherzer fired eight innings of two-hit shutout ball and the Detroit Tigers eked past the Seattle Mariners 1-0 at Safeco Field, snapping a string of 10 losses in Detroit's last 11 games.  Miguel Cabrera's solo home run in the top of the fourth off Mariners starter Roenis Elias represented the game's sole tally.

Scherzer struck out eight and walked only one while allowing just a pair of singles in the process of improving to 6-3 on the season.

Cabrera's home run, his 15th of the season, led off the fourth inning and landed in the Mariners bullpen in left.

Scherzer allowed a two-out single to Michael Saunders in the bottom of the first inning, but stranded him when he retired Justin Smoak on soft liner to short, the start of a string of 12 consecutive Seattle batters retired.  The Mariners didn't have another baserunner until there were two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Dustin Ackley drew a walk and advanced to second on Brad Miller's base hit.  It was the only time in the game when Seattle managed two men on base in the same inning, but Scherzer put an end to any possible threat when he fanned Willie Bloomquist to end the frame.  That strikeout was the start of another 10 straight batters retired that concluded Scherzer's effort.

Joe Nathan came on in relief in the bottom of the ninth and promptly saw the string of consecutive Mariners retired come to an end when he yielded a lead-off single to Endy Chavez.  But Nathan induced James Jones to roll into a 4-6 fielder's choice and then retired Saunders on a looper to short.  Jones stole second, putting the potential tying run in scoring position, but Nathan closed the game when he got Smoak on a grounder to third to preserve the shutout.
