BREWERS SEND CUBS TO 10TH STRAIGHT 'L'
Lohse Loses Shutout in 9th

CHICAGO, May 16 (AP) - Kyle Lohse fired a complete game leading the Milwaukee Brewers past the Chicago Cubs 9-1 at Wrigley Field.  The loss was the 10th in a row for the Cubs, the longest losing streak of the major league season to date.

The Brewers jumped all over Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija for four runs over the first two innings and even though Samardzija righted the ship impressively thereafter, Milwaukee had already produced more than enough offense.  Logan Schafer, subbing in for Carlos Gomez, set the tone immediately when he led off the game with his first home run of the season, the second Brewers lead-off home run of the season.  Jean Segura then doubled and scored on Scooter Gennett's base hit.  Milwaukee ultimately loaded the bases with one out following a pair of walks but Samardzija was able to avoid further damage and the Brewers took a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the frame.

After Lohse kept the Cubs off the board in the bottom of the inning the Brewers doubled their advantage in the top of the second.  Lohse opened the inning with a base hit and advanced to third on Schafer's two-bagger.  Segura grounded to short, scoring Lohse to make it 3-0 and, after Gennett flied to left, Jonathan Lucroy doubled to right, scoring Schafer to put Milwaukee on top 4-0.

That was effectively the ball game.  Chicago didn't advance a runner past second base until the ninth inning, and even then they needed a Milwaukee miscue to do do.  Samardzija regrouped after the two poor innings at the start, retiring 10 in a row at one point and giving his team a chance before exiting the game after six innings still trailing 4-0.

The Brewers then pummeled the Cubs bullpen, with some assistance from the Chicago defense.  With Wesley Wright on the hill for the Cubs in the seventh, Gennett reached to open the inning when first baseman Anthony Rizzo botched a ground ball for an error.  Lucroy walked, putting runners on first and second and Lyle Overbay singled to center.  Gennett tried to score and Emil Bonifacio's attempt to cut the runner down at the plate was wild; the throwing error left runners on second and third and no outs.  Jose Veras replaced Wright and Mark Reynolds grounded into a fielder's choice, with Lucroy being thrown out at the plate but Khris Davis singled home Overbay to give Milwaukee a 6-0 lead.

The Brewers capped their scoring in the ninth with three more runs.  Facing Brian Schlitter, Overbay walked, Reynolds singled and Davis drew a free pass to load the bases and Elian Herrera cleared them with a ringing double.  It was now 9-0.

As the game moved to the bottom of the ninth the only question was whether Lohse would be able to complete the shutout.  It wasn't to be.  Junior Lake reached on an error charged to second baseman Gennett.  Rizzo struck out, but a passed ball on the third strike allowed Lake to advance to second.  Starlin Castro singled to center, moving Lake to third and Luis Valbuena walked, filling the bases.  Wellington Castillo then lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring Lake and ending the shutout bid on an unearned run.  Chris Coughlan, batting as a pinch hitter, filed out to end the contest, giving Lohse the complete game if not the whitewash.
