CINCINNATI, May 15 (AP) - Johnny Cueto took a no-hitter into the seventh inning
and ultimately settled for a one-hit complete game shutout as the Cincinnati
Reds whipped the San Diego Padres 5-0 in the first game of a day-night
doubleheader at Great American Ballpark. It was the first one-hitter of
the major league season and it came just four days after Jon Niese of the New
York Mets no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies.
Cueto had a difficult start to the season but has now allowed one run or less in
four of his last five starts and holds and an intact scoreless innings streak of
15. Cueto's earned run average has declined by 2 1/2 runs since April 16.
The Reds jumped out on top with two quick runs in the bottom of the first off
Padres starter Ian Kennedy. Billy Hamilton led off with a double and,
after Skip Schumaker struck out, Brandon Phillips belted his second home run of
the year into the stands down the left field line to put Cincinnati ahead 2-0.
The Reds doubled the lead in the fifth. Cueto led off with a base hit and
advanced to second on Hamilton's sacrifice. Schumaker lined to left for
the second out but Phillips doubled to right-center, scoring Cueto to up the
lead to three runs. Joey Votto drew a walk and Todd Frazier followed with
a single to center, scoring Phillips to put Cincinnati ahead 4-0.
Votto's second home run of the season, leading off the eighth, capped the
scoring.
Cueto kept the Padres at bay throughout, despite struggling with his
control. He ended up walking five batters, but scattered the bases on
balls; there was never more than one free pass in an inning. He also
fanned nine hitters, including Will Venable and Jedd Gyorko three times
apiece.
The only San Diego safety came in the seventh when Everth Cabrera swung at an
0-1 pitch and blooped a base hit in front of Schumaker in right field. The
Padres never came close to recording another hit.
