Tigers Held to 2 Hits in Shutout 'L'
BALTIMORE, May 13 (AP) - Ubaldo Jimenez worked seven scoreless innings, striking
out eight, and Ryan Webb and Zach Britton each tossed an inning of shutout
relief as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-0 at Camden
Yards. Jimenez and the Orioles bullpen held Detroit to a season-low two
hits en route to the whitewashing.
Jimenez and Tigers starter Drew Smyly matched goose eggs for four innings but in
the bottom of the fifth the Orioles finally broke the deadlock when J.J. Hardy
led off the inning with his second home run of the season.
In the sixth, Baltimore added an insurance run. With one out, Adam Jones
tripled into the right field corner and scored when Chris Davis followed with a
sacrifice fly to right.
Jimenez struggled with his control early, issuing consecutive two-out walks in
the top of the first to Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez before retiring J.D.
Martinez on a pop to second to end the threat. Alex Avila drew a two-out
free pass from Jimenez in the second inning, but Andrew Romine struck out to end
the inning.
Jimenez pitched around a one-out error on Hardy that allowed Torii Hunter to
reach with one out in the third, but almost completely avoided trouble
thereafter. He surrendered a one-out single to Romine in the fifth and
Romine immediately stole second but Jimenez fanned Ian Kinsler and retired
Hunter on a grounder to short to avoid damage.
Overall, Jimenez retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced--the Romine single
was the sole Detroit baserunner--before giving way to Webb to begin the top of
the eighth. Webb retired all three batters he faced on infield grounders,
making way for Britton to work the ninth. Cabrera greeted the left-hander
with a double to right-center, the first Tigers baserunner since the Romine base
hit in the fifth, but the Orioles closer earned his major league leading 13th
save of the season by retiring both Victor and J.D. Martinez on infield rollers
and Austin Jackson on a routine fly to left,
