KERSHAW HANDCUFFS GIANTS
Hudson Suffers 1st 'L' as Dodgers Reclaim NL West Lead
LOS ANGELES, May 11 (AP) - Clayton Kershaw tossed a two-hit complete game
shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-0 before
a sellout crowd at Dodger Stadium. It was the fourth time this year a
major league pitcher has thrown a complete game two-hitter and comes on the same
day that Jon Niese of the New York Mets no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies.
Giants starter Tim Hudson absorbed the defeat, his first of the season against
six wins.
The Dodgers scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the third
inning when Kershaw tripled to right-center with two outs after Giants center
fielder Angel Pagan failed to corral the carom off the wall. Dee Gordon
followed with a base hit and Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead.
The Dodgers added insurance with a three-run sixth, driving Hudson from the
mound in the process. Again, the rally took place with two outs and the
bases empty. After Hudson retired Drew Butera and Kershaw, Gordon singled
to right and stole second. Yasiel Puig followed with a base hit to
left-center, scoring Gordon for a 2-0 lead. Puig then stole second and
advanced to third when Hanley Ramirez reached on an infield single, leaving
runners on the corners. Adrian Gonzalez looped a single just inside the
right field line, plating Puig with the inning's second run and sending Ramirez
to third. Matt Kemp followed by rolling a single into right, scoring
Ramirez, giving the Dodgers a 4-0 lead. Hudson was replaced by Santiago
Casilla who finally got the third out, but the damage had been done.
Kershaw, meanwhile, was largely on cruise control. He retired the first 12
Giants he faced before yielding a double to Pablo Sandoval to open the
fifth. Brandon Hicks followed with a base on balls and both runners moved
up 90 feet on Joaquin Arias' slow roller to third. It was the one and only
time in the game that Kershaw found himself in a real jam and he extracted
himself with aplomb. He induced Juan Perez to tap back to the mound for
the second out, with the runners holding, and then retired Ehire Adrianza on a
grounder to short to end the inning.
The two outs to end the top of the fifth started a string of nine consecutive
batters retired; that streak was interrupted by Perez's one-out single in the
eighth. Kershaw struck out Adrianza and retired pinch hitter Michael Morse
on a grounder to short to end the inning and then set the Giants down in order
in the ninth to end the game.
The victory puts the Dodgers back into first place in the National League West,
a half-game in front of San Francisco.
