D-BACKS THROTTLE CHISOX WITH 23-RUN EFFORT
11-Run 4th Inning Seals Contest

CHICAGO, May 9 (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks erupted for a major league season high 23 runs--ably assisted by a major league season best 11 runs in a single inning--en route to a 23-7 pounding of the Chicago White Sox that saw position player Leury Garcia absorb a seven-run outburst in the ninth inning at U.S. Cellular Field.  Chris Owings led the Diamondbacks with five hits--also tying a major league season high--and Gerardo Parra drove in six runs.  Trevor Cahill tossed five innings of shutout relief to earn the victory for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks set the tone for the game in the top of the first when Paul Goldschmidt doubled with two outs and scored on Miguel Montero's home run off starter Andre Rienzo for a 2-0 lead.  The White Sox countered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Gordon Beckham doubled with one out and scored on Connor Gillespie's base hit.

But Arizona scored twice more in the second inning when Eric Chavez drew a lead-off walk, scored on Martin Prado's triple who then scored himself on Cody Ross' sacrifice fly.  And the Diamondbacks increased their lead to 5-1 in the third when Montero doubled home Owings, who led off the frame with a single.

The White Sox briefly appeared to make it a game in the bottom of the third when Gillespie singled with two outs and trotted home on Jose Abreu's seventh home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

But the Diamondbacks broke the game open once and for all in the fourth when they sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 times.  It all started when Ross reached on first baseman Adam Dunn's error.  A.J. Pollock singled Ross to third and Parra belted a three-run home run off reliever Maikel Cleto into the Bullpen Sports Bar down the right field line for an 8-3 Arizona advantage.  Owings followed with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Goldschmidt fanned for the first out of the inning.  Montero walked and another wild pitch moved the runners to second and third.  Aaron Hill's base hit scored Owings and moved Montero to third.  Jake Petricka replaced Cleto but the hit parade continued when Eric Chavez doubled home both runners.  Prado grounded to second for out number two but Ross singled home Chavez and Pollock walked.  Parra, Owings and Goldschmidt all singled, accounting for three more runs before Zach Putnam replaced Petricka and uncorked yet another wild pitch--the third of the inning--which scored another run.  Montero then grounded out to finally end the inning.

The White Sox scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth, which ended the day for Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy and brought Cahill into the game, who squashed any further thoughts of a Chicago comeback.

The Diamondbacks took a 16-7 lead into the ninth inning, when the White Sox brought utility man Leury Garcia into the game to try to mop up, in an effort to avoid using any more relievers.  Unfortunately for Garcia, the Diamondbacks nicked him for seven more runs, six earned, on six hits and a walk.  Garcia did have the satisfaction, however, of striking out Ender Inciarte, before the inning finally came to end.  Small consolation for an epic beat down.
