CASHNER EXTENDS SCORELESS IP, 'W' STREAKS
Pads Starter Takes 2-Hitter into 9th
SAN DIEGO, May 2 (AP) - Andrew Cashner extended his major league best scoreless
innings streak to 29.1 and won his fifth straight start as the San Diego Padres
defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 at Petco Park. Cashner allowed two
safeties in the first inning and then held the Diamondbacks hitless until Paul
Goldschmidt doubled with one out in the ninth. Huston Street came on and
retired both of the batters he faced to earn his ninth save.
The Padres scored the only run they would need in the third when Rene Rivera
cracked a one-out solo home run off Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo. The
long ball, Rivera's third of the season, was just inside the left field foul
pole and gave San Diego a 1-0 lead.
The Padres added some insurance in the fourth. Will Venable led off with a
base hit and stole second. Seth Smith followed with a double to right,
plating Venable for a 2-0 advantage. Jedd Gyorko grounded to short with
Smith holding, but Chris Owings threw wildly to first on Yonder Alonso's
grounder for a two-base error, allowing Smith to score, giving the Padres a 3-0
lead.
The only true scoring opportunity the Diamondbacks had in the game came in the
opening frame. Gerardo Parra and Martin Prado both popped out to open the
contest but Goldschmidt singled to left and Miguel Montero dropped a base hit
into left-center field, putting runners on first and third with two outs.
Cashner stymied the uprising by retiring Aaron Hill on a grounder to end the
inning.
Hill's ground out began a string of 12 consecutive batters retired by Cashner, a
streak that wasn't broken until Ender Inciarte drew a two-out walk in the
fifth. It was the only free pass surrendered by the Padres starter.
Goldschmidt reached with two outs in the sixth on shortstop Everth Cabrera's
two-base throwing error but was stranded.
Cashner retired another eight hitters in a row and carried a two-hitter into the
ninth before Goldchmidt doubled to right-center--Arizona's third hit of the
contest--with one out. With the tying run on deck, San Diego manager Bud
Black summoned Street from the bullpen. He calmly retired Montero and Hill
on routine ground balls to close out the game.
After starting the season with a loss and a no-decision, Cashner has won his
last five starts, allowing just three runs over 38.1 innings over that
span. His ERA for the season now stands at 0.89.
