V-MART (3), TIGERS (7) WIN HR BATTLE, LOSE GAME
ChiSox Ride Tide of 2 Big Innings
CHICAGO, Apr. 30 (AP) - Led by Victor Martinez, the Detroit Tigers hit a major
league season high seven home runs, but still fell to the Chicago White Sox 11-8
at U.S. Cellular Field. Martinez became the first player this season to
hit three home runs in a game and was joined by Ian Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera,
Austin Jackson and J.D. Martinez, each of whom hit one. Detroit out-homered
Chicago by a staggering margin of 7-1; Marcus Semien of the White Sox hit the
lone long ball for the hoe team. All but one of the Tigers' home runs was
of the solo variety, and in the end the 14-hit White Sox attack, assisted by
five walks, a hit batsman, and two Detroit errors, was too much to
overcome. The fact that the White Sox turned four double plays aided the
club's cause as well.
The Tigers took the lead in the very first inning when Cabrera singled with two
out off White Sox starter Hector Noesi and Victor Martinez hit the first of his
three long balls for a 2-0 Detroit advantage.
But Chicago roared back with four runs in the bottom of the inning off Detroit
starter Max Scherzer. Adam Eaton led off with a base hit and advanced to
second one out later when Jose Abreu drew a walk. Scherzer then issued a
free pass to Adam Dunn, filling the bases. Dayan Viciedo then rolled what
appeared to all the world to be a double play ball to second, but Ian Kinsler
booted it for an error, with Eaton scoring on the play to make it 4-1.
Alexei Ramirez followed with a single to left, scoring Abreu with the tying run
and leaving the bases loaded. Alejandro De Aza's single to center kept the
station to station action going, giving the White Sox a 3-2 lead with the bases
still packed. Scherzer struck out Tyler Flowers for the second out but
Semien rolled a swinging bunt up the third base line for an infield single,
plating the fourth run of the inning. Eaton, the tenth batter of the
frame, grounded out to end the inning, but Chicago now led 4-2.
Jackson's home run leading off the top of the second cut the deficit to 4-3 and
back-to-back home runs in the third off the bats of the Martinezes gave the
Tigers a 5-4 lead.
Chicago tied the game in the game in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of
another Detroit error. Third baseman Nick Castellanos kicked Flowers'
lead-off grounder, allowing the White Sox catcher to reach first. Semien
lined out but Eaton ripped a base hit to left-center, sending Flowers around to
third. Gordon Beckham's soft grounder to short allowed Flowers to score
the tying run.
The Tigers regained the lead on Cabrera's one-out fifth inning bomb into the
bleachers in left-center, but the White Sox seized control of the contest for
the first time in the bottom of the sixth. De Aza lined a hanging 0-2
curve from Scherzer into the right field corner for a double and Flowers singled
to left, advancing De Aza to third. Semien then drove a fastball over the
fence in right-center for a three-run homer, giving Chicago an 8-6 lead and
ending Scherzer's day. Jose Ortega came on to make his season's debut and
retired Eaton and Beckham but then yielded a double to Abreu and walked
Dunn. Viciedo was hit by a pitch and charged the mound, causing both
benches to empty; Viciedo was ejected from the game, but Ortega was not.
The bases were now loaded with two outs and back-to-back infield hits off the
bats of Ramirez and De Aza scored two more runs, putting the White Sox on top
10-6.
The Tigers wouldn't give up. Solo home runs by Kinsler and Victor
Martinez--the latter's third of the game--off Daniel Webb in the seventh cut the
lead to 10-8, but the White Sox got one run back in the bottom of frame.
Semien led off with a single and stole second. Eaton and Beckham walked to
load the baees. Evan Reed came on to pitch for Detroit and gave up a
single to Abreu, scoring Semien, though Eaton was gunned down at the plate by
J.D. Martinez, and Reed worked his way through the rest of the inning without
further damage.
The Tigers offense had finally run out of gas. Ronald Bellisario and Jake
Petricka each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game for the White
Sox.
