MARLINS OVERCOME 5 ERRORS, DEFEAT BRAVES
Dietrich's PH Blast in 7th Is Difference
MIAMI, Apr. 30 (AP) - Derek Dietrich hit a pinch hit three-run homer in the
bottom of the seventh inning and the Miami Marlins overcame five errors and a
3-0 deficit to defeat the Atlanta Braves 5-3 at Marlins Park. The Marlins
are just the second team to commit five errors in a major league thus far this
season; the Arizona Diamondbacks were charged with five miscues on April in an
11-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field in Phoenix.
The Braves, who have scored the fewest runs in the major leagues to date this
year, jumped out to a lead in the top of the first, scoring three times off of
Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi. Jason Heyward led off the game with a
double down the right field line and B.J. Upton drove him home with a base hit
to left-center. Freddie Freeman then laced a single to the gap in
right-center, chasing Upton to third. Justin Upton's sharp grounder
through the middle was knocked down by a diving Ed Lucas, the Miami second
baseman, but the infield hit allowed B.J. Upton to score and left runners on
first and second. Evan Gattis struck out and Dan Uggla grounded to third
with the runners advancing to second and third. Chris Johnson followed by
with an infield single, scoring Freeman to give the Braves a 3-0 lead.
Eovaldi finally retired the side when he induced Andrelton Simmons to ground to
short, but Atlanta had a three-run advantage.
Despite the big first inning outburst, the Braves' offensive woes
resurfaced. After scoring three runs on five hits in the first inning,
Eovaldi and a quartet of relievers held them to no runs on two hits over the
ensuing eight frames, this despite five Miami errors during that eight-inning
stretch.
Braves starter Aaron Harang held the Marlins in check through the first five
innings, aided by a pair of double plays. But in the sixth, Miami broke
through. Giancarlo Stanton singled with one out and advanced to second
when Harang walked Casey McGehee. Jarrod Saltalamacchia grounded a single
to center, scoring Stanton with McGehee stopping at second. It was now
3-1. Garrett Jones then doubled into the right field corner, scoring
McGehee and advancing Saltalamacchia to third. Harang was replaced by
Jordan Walden who managed to escape further damage by retiring Marcel Ozuna on a
shallow fly to right and striking out Adeiny Hechavarria, but the Marlins had
narrowed the lead to a single run.
If the Braves relaxed after escaping the sixth inning with the lead they
shouldn't have. With Walden still on the mound in the bottom of the
seventh, Donovan Solano led off with a base hit and advanced to third on
Christian Yelich's double. Lucas was due to hit but Marlins manager Mike
Redmond called on Dietrich to pinch hit. He deposited the very first pitch
he saw into the seats in right field, giving the Marlins a 5-3 lead.
The Braves threatened in the eighth. A.J. Ramos walked pinch hitter Ramiro
Pena to open the inning and Chris Johnson followed with a tailor made double
play ball to third. But McGehee's throw to second base was low.
Dietrich, who remained in the game defensively after the previous inning's
heroics, managed to knock the errant throw down but all hands were safe, putting
runners on first and second with no outs. It was the fifth error of the
game charged to Miami. Bur Ramos stood tall, striking out Simmons and
pinch hitter Ryan Doumit in succession. Mike Dunn came on to face Heyward
and got him on a roller to short.
Steve Cishek took over for the Marlins in the ninth and retired Atlanta in order
to preserve the win.
