METS EXTEND 'W' STREAK TO 7 WITH SHUTOUT OF BRAVES
Colon Tosses 7 Scoreless Innings
NEW YORK, Apr. 19 (AP) - The New York Mets pushed their winning streak to seven
with a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. Mets starter
Bartolo Colon fired seven shutout innings to earn the victory. All four
Mets runs came in the fifth off Braves starter Ervin Santana. The loss was
the third straight for Atlanta.
The two starters matched scoreless frames until the bottom of the fifth when an
innocent looking inning blew up for Santana and the Braves. Travis
d'Arnaud led off by popping to second and Ruben Tejada followed with a single to
left. Colon's attempt to sacrifice the runner to second failed, with
Tejada forced out and Colon replacing him at first with two outs. Eric
Young lined a base hit to right-center field with Colon chugging all the way to
third. Daniel Murphy then broke the scoreless tie by lopping a single to
center, scoring Colon and advancing Young to second. David Wright came up
with the big hit, lining a double to right-center, scoring both runners and
giving the Mets a 3-0 lead and Curtis Granderson followed with another two-bagger
to right-center, plating Wright for a 4-0 New York advantage.
That was much more than Colon and the Mets bullpen needed. The best
scoring opportunity the Braves had against Colon came in the top of the sixth
when, with one out, B.J. Upton grounded a single to center. Freddie
Freeman then lifted a foul pop that catcher d'Arnaud dropped for an error, and
used the second life to lace a double into the left field corner, putting
runners on second and third. But Colon retired Justin Upton on a shallow
fly to left and Evan Gattis grounded to short to end the threat.
In the eighth, with Jose Valverde on in relief of Colon, the Braves put runners
on first and second with two outs, but Gattis flied out to end the inning with
no damage done.
Gonzalez German came on for New York in the ninth and retired Atlanta in order
to end the game.
The seven-game winning streak is the longest for a National League team thus far
this season and ties for the longest in the majors (Rays and Angels).
