METS USE 10-RUN INNING TO BLUDGEON D-BACKS
All N.Y. Scoring comes in 7th

PHOENIX, Apr. 16 (AP) - The New York Mets became the first team in the major leagues this season to score double digit runs in a single inning, turning a close game into a 10-1 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.  The Mets sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh and hit for the cycle as a team in the frame, changing a 1-0 deficit into a nine-run advantage.  All of New York's scoring came in the seventh.

The game had been a pitchers duel between Mets starter Dillon Gee and Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon McCarthy through six innings.  Mark Trumbo's two-out solo home run off Gee in the bottom of the fourth had given Arizona a 1-0 lead.  Heading into the seventh, New York had advanced only one runner as far as second base.

The top of the seventh began with Ike Davis cracking a 1-0 pitch into the right field seats for a home run, tying the game.  Andrew Brown followed with a single through the middle and Kirk Nieuwenhuis roped a ball off the right-center field fence for a triple scoring Brown and giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.  Anthony Recker popped to short for the first out and Ruben Tejada followed with a routine fly ball to medium right field.  Right fielder Gerardo Parra, in an attempt to get all of his momentum heading toward home for a throw to the plate, muffed the fly ball for an error, allowing Nieuwenhuis to score and put the Mets on top 3-1.  As Curtis Granderson strode to the plate to pinch hit for Gee, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson walked to the mound and pulled McCarthy in favor of J.J. Putz.  Putz threw eight pitches all told and walked Granderson and Eric Young without throwing a single strike.  With the bases now loaded, Gibson returned to the mound and removed Putz in favor of Randall Delgado.  Taking a page from Putz's book, Delgado walked Daniel Murphy--on four pitches--to force in the inning's fourth run.  From there, the dam broke in full.  David Wright rolled a two-run single through the middle, leaving runners on first and third and, after Davis fanned for the second out, Brown delivered his second hit of the inning--a double to left-center, scoring Murphy and chasing Wright to third.  Nieuwenhuis then delivered the capper, a three-run home run into the pool suite in right-center field, giving the Mets a 10-1 lead.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, just signed by the Mets, came on in the bottom of the seventh and tossed three scoreless innings, earning the save and allowing the New York bullpen to accrue some much needed rest.  Brad Ziegler mopped up with a pair of scoreless innings for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks have now dropped six straight games.
