5-RUN 14TH PUTS BRAVES PAST PHILS
Atlanta Wins Battle of Pinch Runners
PHILADELPHIA, Apr. 16 (AP)- Ryan Doumit led off with a home run in the top of
the 14th inning, sparking a five-run uprising that led the Atlanta Braves past
the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 at Citizens Bank Park. The game saw a wild
sequence of events in both halves of the ninth as each club's closer blew a save
opportunity before the Braves took full advantage of an exhausted Phillies
bullpen in the 14th.
Things started normally enough. The Phillies pushed a pair of runs across
in the bottom of the first against Atlanta starter Julio Tehran. Ben
Revere led off with a single to left, stole second one out later and scored on
Chase Utley's double. After Ryan Howerd struck out Marlon Byrd rolled a
base hit into left, scoring Utley to give Philadelphia a two-run lead.
Freddy Galvis' two-out solo home run in the fourth made it 3-0.
The Braves began their inexorable comeback in the fifth when Evan Gattis led off
with a base hit off Phillies starter Cliff Lee and eventually scored on
Andrleton Simmons' two-out triple to right. Atlanta cut the deficit to one
run in the seventh when Justin Upton led off with a single to center and scored
on Chris Johnson's two-out double.
The Phillies took the 3-2 lead into the ninth and turned things over to Jonathan
Papelbon to close things out. But Freddie Freeman led off with a
single--on an 0-2 pitch--to right. Justin Upton struck out but Paplebon
then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Freeman to take second. With the
potential tying run now in scoring position, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez then
replaced Freeman with pinch runner Jordan Schafer. Papelbon went on to
walk Gattis and Gonzalez again went to his bench, inserting Ramiro Pena to run
for Gattis, representing the potential go-ahead run. Doumit struck out,
but the pinch running decisions came to the fore when Johnson roped his second
two-bagger of the game, into the gap in right-center field, scoring both Schafer
and Pena and giving the Braves the lead for the first time. Simmons was
walked intentionally before Papelbon retired pinch hitter Gerald Laird on a pop
to third and left the field to a cascade of boos.
The Braves put Craig Kimbrel, their closer, on the mound in the bottom of the
ninth, and he promptly walked Howard leading off the inning. Howard was
replaced at first by pinch runner Tony Gwynn, Jr. A passed ball charged to
Laird allowed Gywnn to take second before Kimbrel fanned Byrd for the first
out. Dominic Brown then dumped a base hit into left field and Gwynn barely
beat the throw of Justin Upton, tying the game at four, with Brown taking second
on the throw. Carlos Ruiz grounded to second, advancing Brown to third
before Kimbrel struck out Galvis, sending the game to extra innings.
Phillies reliever B.J. Rosenberg pitched around a two-out Braves threat in the
top of the 11th and Braves reliever Ian Thomas pitched out of a first and second
one out jam in the bottom half of the inning, but there were no serious
additional threats until the fourteenth. At that point, the Phillies had
burned through all of their rested relievers and had to call on starter Roberto
Hernandez, on two days rest, and that's when the wheels came off. Doumit's
home run gave the Braves a 5-4 lead and after Johnson filed out, Hernandez
couldn't find the strike zone. He walked Simmons, Laird and Jayson Heyward
on a total of 13 pitches, loading the bases. It took seven pitches, but he
eventually walked B.J. Upton to force in the sixth Atlanta run, and pitcher
David Hale reached on an infield single to make it 7-4. Phillies manager
Ryne Sandberg reluctantly called on Jeff Manship, who was now working for the
third time in four days, to replace Hernandez, and he retired Justin Upton on a
shallow fly ball to right but Pena applied the coup de grace with a two-run
single to left before Doumit, the tenth batter of the inning, finally fanned for
the third out.
Gus Schlosser came on and retired Philadelphia in order in the bottom of the
14th to end the game. The two teams used a combined 16 pitchers in the
contest.
