Kluber Tosses CG Loss
CHICAGO, Apr. 13 (AP) - Jose Quintana posted eight innings of shutout ball,
leading the Chicago White Sox past the Cleveland Indians 1-0 at U.S. Cellular
Field. Quintana's counterpart, Corey Kluber, fired a complete game,
allowing just one run on five hits while striking out eight.
Cleveland missed a number of scoring opportunities early on, none better than in
the top of the fourth. Carlos Santana led off by reaching on third baseman
Connor Gillespie's error, and Quintana then walked Ryan Raburn and Michael
Brantley, loading the bases with no outs. But Yan Gomes fouled to Jose
Abreu for the first out. David Murphy followed with a tapper back to
Quintana who forced Santana at the plate. The bases remained filled but
there were now two outs. The threat came to a formal end when Quintana
induced Mike Aviles to ground to short to end the inning.
The stifling of the scoring threat seemed to work as a tonic for Quintana.
After allowing five batters to reach safely after the first three-plus innings,
he retired the next 12 hitters he faced before yielding a lead-off single to
Asdrubel Cabrera in the top of the eighth. White Sox manager Robin Ventura
had a decision to make: with the meat of the Indians order due up, leave
Quintana, who had thrown more than 100 pitches at this point, in the game or dip
into an overworked, not particularly effective bullpen. After a visit to
the mount, Ventura chose to stick with Quintana, who rewarded his skipper with a
scoreless frame. Cabrera aided the Chicago cause when he was thrown out
trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt to Nick Swisher. White Sox
catcher Tyler Flowers scooped the ball up and rifled a strike to second, cutting
down Cabrera for the first out. Quintana ultimately fanned Swisher and
retired Jason Kipnis on a pop to short, then left the mound to a rousing ovation
from the 21,650 members of the partisan crowd.
If anything, Kluber was even more effective. After walking two batters in
the first, the Cleveland right-hander retired 16 of 17 hitters, succumbing only
to a harmless single off the bat of Flowers in the third. The string was
broken by Gillespie's two-out double in the sixth, but Kluber struck out Abreu
to keep the game scoreless.
But in the seventh, Adam Dunn started the inning by fighting off an inside pitch
and flaring a double just inside the left field foul line. He was replaced
by pinch runner Leury Garcia. Dayan Viciedo grounded to short, with Garcia
holding, but Alejandro De Aza grounded a single into right field, scoring the
speedy Garcia without a throw to give Chicago a a 1-0 advantage.
The score was still 1-0 as the contest reached the ninth inning and Jake
Petricka took over for Quintana, but promptly yielded a lead-off single to
Santana. Pinch hitter Lonnie Chisenhall flied to center for the first out,
bringing Brantley to the plate. On a 1-1 pitch he slashed a sharp grounder
right to shortstop Alexi Ramirez who started a 6-4-3 double play, ending the
game.
