O'S TOP YANKS DESPITE 16 K'S
Davis, Jones HRs Key Series Sweep
NEW YORK, Apr. 9 (AP) - Chris Davis and Adam Jones both homered as the Baltimore
Orioles completed a three-game series sweep with a 4-2 victory over the New York
Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles won the game despite striking out
16 times at the hands of four Yankees pitchers. The 16 strikeouts recorded
by New York hurlers ties the high mark for one team in a game thus far this
season, but it's the only time a club has fanned at least 15 batters in a game
and lost. Every Orioles player who came to the plate in the contest struck
out at least once. The Yankees bullpen was particular effective, tossing a
combined 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief, with eight strikeouts. Shane
Greene fanned five in a row during his two-inning stint.
The starting pitchers, Miguel Gonzalez of the Orioles and Yankees right-hander
Masahiro Tanaka, matched scoreless frames through three. In the top of the
fourth, Nick Markakis became the first Baltimore baserunner with a lead-off
single to left-center. Delmon Young struck out but Davis' homered just
inside the right field foul pole to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead.
Baltimore doubled that advantage in the sixth. Tanaka retired Young and
Davis but Jones made it 3-0 when he deposited a Tanaka offering into the lower
seats in left. Matt Wieters and Nelson Cruz followed with consecutive
singles, putting runners on first and second and Steve Lombardozzi then lined a
base hit to left-center, plating Wieters to make it 4-0 in favor of the
Orioles. That was the end of the day for Tanaka; Cesar Cabral replaced him
and struck out Ryan Flaherty to end the inning.
Gonzalez shut the Yankees out through six but Brian McCann led off the bottom of
the seventh with a home run to cut the deficit to 4-1 and, two outs later, Brian
Roberts ended Gonzalez's outing with a solo shot to right to make it 4-2.
Ryan Webb came on to record the final out of the seventh, retiring Yangervis
Solarte on a grounder to short. Darren O'Day and Zach Britton followed by
each tossing a scoreless inning, with Britton recording his fifth save in as
many attempts on the year.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Orioles; the Yankees have now dropped
four straight.
