Sizemore Homers Twice, Drives in 5
BOSTON, Apr. 4 (AP) - Four Red Sox pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as
Boston pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 11-0 in the home opener at Fenway
Park. Grady Sizemore hit a pair of home runs, part of a three-hit,
three-run, five-RBI effort that paced a 16-hit attack. Daniel Nava also
homered for the Red Sox.
Boston seized control of the game immediately, scoring four times in the opening
frame off Brewers starter Marco Estrada. All four runs came with two
outs. Dustin Pedroia singled with one out and, after David Ortiz flied to
right, Mike Napoli's base hit put runners on first and second. Mike Carp's
single plated Pedroia with the game's first run and Sizemore cracked a three-run
homer into the seats in right to put the Red Sox on top 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sizemore got Estrada again, this time belting a
one-out solo homer into the bullpen in right-center for a 5-0 Boston lead.
The Red Sox then blew the game open in the fifth with three more runs.
Nava homered with one out and, one out later, Carp drove home two more with a
triple off the garage door in deep right-center.
Consecutive two-out seventh inning singles off the bats of Xander Bogaerts and
A.J. Pierzynski each plated a run to make it 10-0 and Napoli's two-out base hit
to center in the eighth drove home Pedroia to cap the scoring.
Red Sox starter Jake Peavy tossed six shutout innings, yielding the only
Milwaukee safety when Aramis Ramirez led off the top of the second with a clean
single to left. It would be the only hit of the game for the
Brewers. After Jonathan Lucroy struck out, Peavy issued consecutive walks
to Logan Schaefer and Khris Davis to load the bases. But Scooter Gennett
fouled to Pierzynski for the second out and Peavy fanned Lyle Overbay to end the
threat.
Thus began a string of 11 straight batters retired by Peavy, broken in the top
of the sixth when Carlos Gomez drew a lead-off free pass. Gomez was
immediately erased from the bases when Jean Segura rolled into a double
play. Gomez was the last batter to reach safely for the Brewers.
Peavy finished off the sixth by retiring Ryan Braun on a foul pop to Napoli at
first and then Junichi Tazawa, Burke Badenhop and Koji Uehara each tossed a
perfect inning of relief, closing out the game.
Boston had been smarting after being swept by the Orioles in the season opening
series in Baltimore. But all of the games had been close and the Red Sox
took out their frustrations this afternoon on the Brewers.
