PEREZ, 3 RELIEVERS HANDCUFF PHILS
Martin Drives in Game's Lone Run
ARLINGTON, Tex., Apr. 1 (AP) - Martin Perez held the Phillies scoreless for
6-2/3 innings and three relievers combined to retire the final seven batters in
order as the Texas Rangers slipped past Philadelphia 1-0 at Globe Life
Park. The four Rangers hurlers held the Phillies to just two hits and four
total baserunners while striking out 11.
Perez set down 11 of the first 12 batters he faced--a harmless two-out walk to
Carlos Ruiz in the second inning was the lone exception--before surrendering his
first hit, a clean two-out single off the bat of Marlon Byrd in the
fourth. Ryan Howard struck out to end the frame.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Rangers scored the game's only run. Alex
Rios led off with a double down the right field line off Phillies starter A.J.
Burnett. Mitch Moreland lined out and Donnie Murphy struck out and it
appeared that the Rangers would blow a golden scoring opportunity. But
Leonys Martin lashed an 0-1 offering into right-center field for a base hit,
scoring Rios to give Texas a 1-0 lead.
Following the Byrd safety, Perez retired five straight before yielding a one-out
double into the left field corner to Ben Revere in the sixth. Revere would
be the sole Philadelphia baserunner to reach scoring position in the entire
game. Perez rose to the occasion, retiring Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley
on infield grounders to quash the threat.
Perez retired Byrd and Howard on routine fly balls to open the seventh, and then
walked Ruiz on four pitches. With the tying run now on base and Domonic
Brown due up, Rangers manager Ron Washington summoned Shawn Tolleson from the
bullpen. Tolleson retired Brown on a fly to center to keep the lead
intact.
Tolleson set down the first two batters in the eighth, then gave way to Neal
Cotts who took care of Revere. Joakim Soria came on to pitch a perfect
ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced to earn the save.
