AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox
Game 1: Pedro Martinez vs. Bartolo
Colon, U.S. Cellular Field
COLON OUTDUELS PEDRO, CHISOX TAKE GAME 1
Marte Ks Side in 9th with Tying Runs on Base
CHICAGO, Oct. 9 (AP) - Bartolo Colon allowed just one run over eight strong
innings of work and the Chicago White Sox mustered just enough offense against
Pedro Martinez to defeat the Boston Red Sox, 3-1 at U.S. Cellular Field in Game
1 of the American League Championship Series. Both starters performed
admirably, but Colon was just a little bit better than Martinez. The White
Sox roughed up the Boston starter a bit over the first two innings, but Martinez
settled down in short order and largely kept Chicago at bay. Unfortunately
for the Red Sox, Colon was strong throughout.
Chicago pushed a two-out run across in the bottom of the first inning, setting
the tone for the game. Frank Thomas roped a two-out double into the
left-center field gap and then scored when Magglio Ordonez laced a single down
the right field line.
The White Sox doubled their lead in the second. Joe Crede led off with a
single to center and Jose Valentin followed with a rope to right field that
seemed to freeze Trot Nixon for a moment. The ball one-hopped the wall for
a double, giving Chicago runners at second and third with none out. Sandy
Alomar's soft grounder to the left side scored Crede for a 2-0 White Sox lead,
but Martinez stiffened and kept the damage to a minimum.
The Red Sox got on the board in the third when Nixon drilled an 0-1 offering
into the bleachers in right-center field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Jason Varitek followed with a double, but Colon retired Johnny Damon, Nomar
Garciaparra and Todd Walker in order to retain the Chicago advantage.
Both starting pitchers were extremely stingy from that point on. After
Valentin's double in the third, Martinez retired 13 of the next 14 batters he
faced. Following Varitek's double, Colon allowed only one more hit to the
Red Sox before departing the game after the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, a key fielding mistake gave the White Sox an
insurance run. After Martinez fanned Ordonez, Carlos Lee hit a grounder to
the left of second baseman Todd Walker who made a nice play on the ball on the
outfield grass, but fired wide of first. The throw ended up in the first
base side dugout for a two-base error. Paul Konerko grounded out for what
would have been the final out of the inning, but Crede came through with an
opposite field single, scoring Lee with an unearned run and giving the White Sox
a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Tom Gordon took over for Colon, and yielded a
lead-off single to right to Manny Ramirez. With David Ortiz due up, and
now representing the tying run, Chicago manager Jerry Manuel replaced Gordon
with southpaw Damaso Marte, who struck Ortiz out swinging on a 3-2 pitch.
Marte also went full on Kevin Millar, but walked him, putting runners on first
and second. Red Sox manager Grady Little sent Damian Jackson into the game
to run for Millar, representing the potential tying run. Marte then worked
over Bill Mueller masterfully, striking him out on three pitches. Little
sent Gabe Kapler out to pinch hit for Trot Nixon, but Marte got the best of him
as well, fanning him on a 2-2 slider, striking out the side in the process.
Upon the start of the postseason, the White Sox were widely regarded as the
weakest team in the AL playoff field, but after sweeping the highly favored
Yankees in the ALDS and now taking Game 1 of the ALCS from the Red Sox, many are
giving this Chicago club a second look.
Game 2 will be tomorrow. Derek Lowe is expected to get the start for
Boston; the White Sox will go with Estaban Loaiza.

MUELLER'S BLAST IN 14TH SQUARES SERIES
BoSox Outlast ChiSox
CHICAGO, Oct. 10 (AP) - Bill Mueller's two-run home run in the top of the 14th
inning was followed by Trot Nixon's second long ball of the game and the Boston
Red Sox evened their American League Championship Series at a game apiece with a
7-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The Red Sox
overcame 18 strikeouts at the hands of eight White Sox pitchers.
The contest was tight throughout. Boston drew first blood with a pair of
runs in the top of the second inning. Mueller led off the frame with a
base hit to center off Chicago starter Estaban Loaiza and then scored when Nixon
hit his first home run of the game, down the line in right field.
But the White Sox immediately countered against Derek Lowe in the bottom of the
inning. Magglio Ordonez started things off with a single to center and
moved to second when Carl Everett drew a walk. Paul Konerko then dropped a
single of his own into center field, scoring Ordonez and advancing Everett to
second. Joe Crede's soft grounder to short advanced the runners to second
and third and Jose Valentin's infield roller plated Everett with the tying run.
The Red Sox reclaimed the lead in the fourth. Mueller and Nixon drew back
to back free passes to open the inning and Jason Varitek sacrificed the runners
to second and third. Loaiza then hit Johnny Damon with a 1-1 pitch,
loading the bases. Nomar Garciaparra's sacrifice fly to left scored
Mueller and gave Boston a 3-2 advantage.
The Red Sox increased their lead to two runs in the fifth. David Ortiz
doubled over the head of Everett in center field with one out and, after Kevin
Millar grunded to third, Mueller came through again, this time with a single to
the gap in left-center, scoring Ortiz to make it 4-2.
But the White Sox fought back in the sixth against reliever Brandon Lyon.
Konerko started things off with a double and then scored when Joe Crede lined a
single to right-center field.
In the seventh, Chicago drew even. Facing Scott Williamson, Carlos Lee
crushed his second home run of the series into the left-center field bleachers,
knotting the score at four.
That's how things remained, deep into extra innings, despite scoring
opportunities for both clubs. Two-out singles by Crede and Valentin off
Alan Embree in the bottom of the eighth put runners on first and third for the
White Sox but Byung-Hyun Kim came on for Boston and struck out pinch hitter
Brian Daubach to end the threat. In the bottom of the tenth, Ordonez led
off with a double and moved to third with one out on Everett's sacrifice bunt,
but Konerko grounded to short with the infield pulled in and Crede lined out to
center.
In the top of the 11th, the Red Sox had runners at second and third with two
outs, but Tom Gordon struck out Ortiz to escape damage.
The White Sox were on their eighth pitcher--Dan Wright, in his second inning of
work--when the 14th began. Ortiz grounded a double down the right field
line and was replaced by pinch runner Dave McCarty--the last man standing on the
Boston bench. Wright fanned Millar--the 18th time a Red Sox hitter had
struck out--for the first out of the inning. But Mueller picked out a 1-1
fastball and drove it into the right-center field bleachers for a 6-4 Boston
lead. Nixon followed with a blast into the left-center field seats and the
lead was up to three runs.
John Burkett, the eighth Red Sox hurler of the game, walked Frank Thomas with
one out in the bottom of the inning but retired Ordonez on an infield pop and
Everett on a roller to second to wrap up a hard-fought Boston win.
The teams will fly to Boston during tomorrow's off-day and resume the series at
Fenway Park on Oct. 12.

LEE'S 3-RUN BLAST IN 9TH HELPS CHISOX STEAL GAME 3
Schoenweiss Chicago Pitching Hero
BOSTON, Oct. 12 (AP) - Carlos Lee belted a three-run home run in the top of the
ninth inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied from a three-run deficit in the
eighth inning to stun the Boston Red Sox, 8-7 at Fenway Park, and take a 2-1
lead in the American League Championship Series. The Lee blast, his second
of the series, came off Red Sox closer Byung-Hyun Kim and followed singles by
Sandy Alomar and Roberto Alomar to open the inning.
Game 3 was a back-and-forth affair until the bottom of the fifth when Boston
seemed to gain firm control, only to see their work undone in the end.
The White Sox drew first blood, pushing a run across in the second inning off
Red Sox starter Jeff Suppan. Carl Everett doubled off the Green Monster
with one out and coasted home on Paul Konerko's single to right-center.
The Red Sox fought back with two runs in their half of the inning against Mark
Buehrle. With two outs Kevin Millar's chopper over the mound went for an
infield single. Bill Mueller ripped a ground-rule double to right, putting
runners on second and third and Trot Nixon followed with a double of his own
against the bullpen retaining wall in right-center field, scoring both runners
and giving Boston a 2-1 advantage.
The White Sox fought back to take the lead in the fourth. Magglio Ordonez
lined a lead-off single to left and Everett followed with a home run over the
Monster for a 3-2 Chicago advantage.
Boston tied the game in the bottom of the inning when David Ortiz led off with a
double, moved to third on Millar's base hit to right and scored one out later
when the White Sox couldn't turn the relay on Nixon's potential double play
grounder to third. Ortiz scored on the fielder's choice, knotting the game
at three.
Again Chicago took the lead, this time in the fifth. Roberto Alomar broke
an 0-for-13 slump in the series with a double down the right field line and Lee
brought him home with a single to center.
But the Red Sox exploded for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take
command. Nomar Garciaparra drew a lead-off walk from Buehrle. Todd
Walker flied to right but Manny Ramirez drew a four-pitch free pass, putting
runners on first and second. Ortiz then singled to center. Everett's
throw to the plate in an attempt to nail Garciaparra was wild and went all the
way to the screen, allowing Ramirez to take third and Ortiz to advance to
second. The game was now tied, and Scott Sullivan replaced Buehrle on the
mound, but the Red Sox weren't done. Millar cranked a double to the base
of the Monster in left-center, scoring both Ramirez and Ortiz and Boston led
6-4.
In the sixth, the Red Sox added an insurance run off Kelly Wunsch. With
one out, Garciaparra singled to left. After Todd Walker flied out, Ramirez
drew his second base on balls of the game, putting runners at first and
second. Ortiz then came through again, singling to center and scoring
Garciaparra to increase the Boston lead to 7-4.
The White Sox drew a bit closer in the top of the eighth. With Mike Timlin
on the hill for the Red Sox, Frank Thomas led off with a single. Ordonez
grounded a base hit of his own up the middle with Thomas stopping at
second. Everett's grounder to short moved both runners up 90 feet and Paul
Konerko walked to load the bases. Grady Little decided to stick with
Timlin and he induced Joe Crede to roll into a fielder's choice at second.
Thomas scored, cutting Boston's lead to 7-5, but there were now two outs.
Kim then replaced Timlin and retired Jose Valentin on a fly to right.
Scott Schoenweiss came on for Chicago in the bottom of the eighth and pitched
around a two-out Todd Walker single to hold the Red Sox off the scoreboard.
In the top of the ninth, with Kim still on the mound, Sandy Alomar, who had
taken over behind the plate when Miguel Olivo was lifted for a pinch hitter in
the seventh, led off with a base hit. Roberto Alomar then singled to
left-center, allowing Sandy to advance to third without a play. That
brought Lee to the plate. Kim moved ahead 0-2 in the count and then made a
fatal mistake by hanging a slider. Lee crushed it over the Monster seats
in straight away left field. The ball landed on Lansdowne Street and the
White Sox had a stunning 8-7 lead. Kim retired the next three batters in
order, but the horse was out of the barn.
In a somewhat unorthodox move, White Sox manager Jerry Manuel decided to stick
with Schoenweiss to start the bottom of the ninth, though he had right-hander
Tom Gordon warming in the bullpen. The southpaw struck out Ortiz to open
the inning and retired Millar on a fly to left. Mueller walked, however,
and was replaced with pinch runner Damian Jackson. But Schoenweiss
remained in the game and struck out Nixon on three pitches to close out the
contest.
The two clubs will meet again tomorrow at Fenway Park. Jon Garland is
expected to make the start for the White Sox while Tim Wakefield is the
anticipated starter for Boston.

CHISOX RALLY FROM 3-RUN DEFICIT, MOVE TO WITHIN A GAME OF WORLD SERIES
Garland, White Sox Bullpen Hold BoSox to 1 Hit after Shaky 1st Inning
BOSTON, Oct. 13 (AP) - The Chicago White Sox overcame an early 4-1 deficit and
broke a 4-all tie with two runs in the eighth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox,
6-4 at Fenway Park, and move within a game of a trip to the World Series.
White Sox starter Jon Garland, nearly pulled from the game during a difficult
first inning, rallied to retire 17 consecutive batters at one point. He
and relievers Kelly Wunsch, Scott Sullivan and Tom Gordon held the Red Sox to
just one hit and no runs after the first inning.
The White Sox scored a run in the top of the first inning off Boston starter Tim
Wakefield on Carlos Lee's third home run of the American League Championship
Series. The one-out solo shot spotted Chicago a 1-0 lead.
But the Red Sox roared back in a big way in the bottom of the frame.
Johnny Damon led off with a double to left and Nomar Garciaparra drove a hanging
Garland sinker over the Green Monster, just inside the left field foul pole, for
a two-run home run and a 2-1 Boston lead. Todd Walker drew a free pass on
a 3-2 offering and Manny Ramirez followed with a single to left, advancing
Walker to second. Garland finally recorded an out, fanning David Ortiz,
and when Kevin Millar flied to Lee in left field it appeared that the damage
would be minimized. But when Bill Mueller cracked a double that rolled to
the bullpen fence in right-center field, scoring both Walker and Ramirez to give
the Red Sox a 4-1 advantage, Dan Wright got up in the Chicago bullpen.
Garland intentionally walked Trot Nixon and then retired Doug Mirabelli on a fly
to left, but the White Sox now trailed 4-1.
Garland, however, regrouped and the Red Sox didn't put another man on base until
the seventh inning.
The White Sox, meanwhile, tried to chip away at the Boston lead. In the
third, Jose Valentin led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch.
Miguel Olivo followed by grounding a single into left field, scoring Valentin to
cut the Red Sox lead to 4-2.
Wakefield held Chicago off the scoreboard through the fifth inning, but the
White Sox got to him in the sixth. Roberto Alomar led off with a single to
center. Lee ripped a line drive right at second baseman Walker for the
first out but Frank Thomas lofted a high fly down the right field line that
caromed off the Pesky Pole for a two-run home run and a tie ball game, stunning
the Fenway Park crowd. Magglio Ordonez followed with a single, but
appeared to tweak his calf muscle in what would prove to be a key development,
though he stayed in the game temporarily. Carl Everett rolled into a
double play to end the inning.
With the game still tied in the top of the seventh, Joe Crede lined a one-out
single for the White Sox, ending Wakefield's stint on the mound. He was
replaced by Alan Embree who faced Valentin. Embree walked Valentin, but
the ball four pitch eluded Mirabelli and took a funny carom off the backstop and
rolled toward the first base side dugout. Crede moved all the way to third
before the ball could be recovered near the on deck circle and Valentin ended up
on second. Brandon Lyon was summoned by Red Sox manager Grady Little from
the bullpen to replace Embree and, with the infield in, he induced an infield
pop fly off the bat of Olivo for the second out. Lyon walked Alomar on
four pitches to load the bases but Lee flied to Damon in center for the third
out, stranding the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the seventh, Garland retired Mueller on a grounder to short but
Nixon broke the string of 17 consecutive batters retired by tripling into the
triangle in right-center field. With the go-ahead run on third and only
one out, the White Sox, including manager Jerry Manuel, had a conference at the
mound. Garland remained in the game to face Jason Varitek, pinch hitting
for Doug Mirabelli, with the infield drawn in. Garland struck out Varitek
swinging for a huge second out, then left the game in favor of southpaw Kelly
Wunsch to face Damon who flied routinely to left to end the inning with the
score still tied.
In the eighth, the White Sox took their first lead of the contest since the
first inning. Thomas led off with a single and was replaced by pinch
runner Willie Harris. Ordonez was due, but because of the calf injury, was
replaced by pinch hitter Tony Graffanino. Harris stole second and, after
failing to get a bunt down on an 0-1 offering, Graffanino turned the tables and
singled to center, scoring Harris with the go-ahead run. Everett struck
out but Paul Konerko drew a walk, putting runners on first and second.
That was it for Lyon; he was replaced by Stan Williamson who struck out Crede
but Valentin singled to right-center, scoring Graffanino and sending Konerko to
third. Olivo fanned to end the inning but Chicago now held a 6-4 lead.
Scott Sullivan came on to pitch for the White Sox in the bottom of the eighth
and walked Garciaparra to start the inning, but then retired Walker on a fly to
right and struck out Ramirez. With David Ortiz due up, Tom Gordon was
called into the game by Manuel and he got Ortiz to fly to center on the very
first pitch to end the inning.
The White Sox went quietly in the top of the ninth and Boston had Millar,
Mueller and Nixon due in the bottom of the inning. Gordon wasn't
intimidated, striking out the side to close the game.
The Red Sox now have their backs firmly against the wall, trailing in the ALCS
three games to one, and must win tomorrow
behind Pedro Martinez to keep their season alive. The White will counter
with Bartolo Colon.

Game 5: Bartolo Colon vs. Pedro
Martinez, Fenway Park
MARTINEZ, BOSOX LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY
Walker HR Part of 4 Hits
BOSTON, Oct. 14 (AP) - Pedro Martinez allowed one run over seven innings of work
and Todd Walker rapped out four hits, including a two-run home run, as the
Boston Red Sox sent the American League Championship Series back to Chicago with
a 5-2 Game 5 victory over the White Sox at Fenway Park. Chicago leads the
ALCS, three games to two.
The Red Sox banged out 14 hits, and stranded 13 runners, but despite the missed
opportunities never trailed in the contest. White Sox starter Bartolo
Colon bent frequently, surrendering 11 hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings of
work, but rarely broke, keeping Chicago in the game.
The Red Sox scored first. In the bottom of the second, David Ortiz and
Kevin Millar knocked out back-to-back singles leading off the inning. Bill
Mueller's tapper to the right side advanced the baserunners to second and third
with one out and Trot Nixon's sacrifice fly scored Ortiz just ahead of the throw
from Magglio Ordonez.
In the third, Boston added to its lead. Johnny Damon drew a lead-off walk
and, after Nomar Garciaparra flied to center, Colon was called for a balk,
allowing Damon to take second. Walker then ripped a line drive into the
seats down the right-field line for a two-run home run and a 3-0 Red Sox
advantage.
The White Sox were foiled in their attempt to get on the scoreboard in the
fourth. With one out, Paul Konerko singled to left and he advanced to
third on Joe Crede's double high off the Green Monster in left. Jose
Valentin followed with a fly ball to center and Konerko tried to score but
Damon's throw was in time to cut him down for a double play, preserving
Martinez's shutout for the time being.
Chicago finally dented home plate in the top of the sixth. Frank Thomas
led off by drawing a free pass and, after Ordonez struck out, Carl Everett
doubled to right, advancing Thomas to third. Konerko then grounded to
short, scoring Thomas to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Red Sox finally got Colon out of the game in the sixth when Garciaparra
doubled with one out. The White Sox turned to Kelly Wunsch who retired
Walker on a fly to center, walked Manny Ramirez intentionally, and struck out
Ortiz to end the threat.
But Boston picked up some insurance off reliever Billy Koch in the
seventh. Millar led off with a two-bagger to left-center and was replaced
by pinch runner Damian Jackson. Bill Mueller sacrificed Jackson to third
and Nixon was given an intentional pass, putting runners on the corners with one
out. Varitek's soft grounder to third scored Jackson with the fourth
Boston run and advanced Nixon to second with two outs. Damon then drove
Nixon home with a double to right-center, giving the Red Sox a 5-1 lead.
Thomas cut that lead to 5-2 with a one-out solo home run, his second of the
series, off Mike Timlin in the top of the eighth. Byung-Hyun Kim, who has
had some troubles in this postseason, surrendered a one-out double to Valentin
in the top of the ninth but struck out pinch hitter Brian Daubach and Roberto
Alomar to close out the game.
After an off-day, the ALCS resumes at U.S. Cellular Field for Game 6.
Derek Lowe and Estaban Loaiza are the expected starters for the Red Sox and
White Sox respectively.

Game 6: Derek Lowe vs. Estaban

DAMON, LOWE HELP BOSOX FORCE GAME 7
Contest Ends with Winning Run on Base
CHICAGO, Oct. 16 (AP) - There will be a Game 7 in the American League
Championship Series. The Boston Red Sox made sure of that by winning a
tense, closely contested Game 6, 3-2, over the Chicago White Sox at U.S.
Cellular Field. Johnny Damon, who entered the contest just 4-for-24, went
5-for-5, with a double and a home run, and scored all three Boston
tallies. Derek Lowe worked into the seventh inning and allowed two runs to
pick up the win, outpitching Estaban Loaiza, who tossed 7 1/3 frames but
surrendered three runs.
Each team scored in the first inning. Damon led off with a single for the
Red Sox and stole second when Nomar Garciaparra waved at a 3-2 pitch. Todd
Walker then dropped a single into center, scoring Damon, but was thrown out at
second when Carl Everett's throw to the plate was cut off.
In the bottom of the first, Roberto Alomar led off with a double down the right
field line and Lowe hit Carlos Lee with a pitch, putting runners on first and
second. One out later, Magglio Ordonez doubled to right-center, scoring
Alomar to tie the game and advancing Lee to third. But Lowe came back to
retire Everett on a pop fly that Garciaparra caught in shallow center and Paul
Konerko on a roller to second, keeping the game tied 1-1.
Boston nearly took the lead in the second. David Ortiz started the inning
with a single to right and moved to second on Kevin Millar's slow roller to
second. Bill Mueller then singled to center but Everett cut down Ortiz at
the plate for the second out and Trot Nixon lined to center to end the inning.
The Red Sox did jump out on top in the third when Damon and Garciaparra hit
back-to-back one-out doubles, giving Boston a 2-1 lead.
The White Sox opened the home half of the third with a walk to Alomar and a
single off the bat of Lee but Lowe retired the next three batters in order to
retain the Boston advantage.
Boston added an insurance run in the fifth when Damon homered to left off Loaiza.
The opposite field solo shot, the first home run of the series for Damon, came
with one out and put the Red Sox ahead 3-1.
The White Sox got the run back in the bottom of the seventh when Jose Valentin
launched a Lowe offering into the left-center field bleachers, cutting the
deficit to 3-2. Brian Daubach came on to pinch hit for Olivo and was hit
by Lowe. Willie Harris pinch ran for Daubach and Lowe was replaced on the
mound by Scott Sauerbeck. Harris stole second base and then advanced to
third when Roberto Alomar grounded to second. Mike Timlin took over for
Sauerbeck and retired Lee on a fly to right to end the inning with the Red Sox
still on top by a run.
The Red Sox managed a couple of baserunners in the top of the ninth but couldn't
score. Timlin began the ninth for Boston, following a perfect eighth, but
yielded a lead-off single to Paul Konerko, who was replaced at first by pinch
runner Aaron Rowand. Byung-Hyun Kim was summoned from the bullpen by Red
Sox manager Grady Little to close out the game and he retired Joe Crede on a fly
to left and Valentin on a fly ball to center. But Sandy Alomar, who had
come on to do the catching after Olivo left for a pinch hitter in the seventh,
grounded a single through the box, advancing Rowand to third. Rorberto
Alomar then rolled weakly back to Kim who threw him out to end the game and
bring about a winner-take-all Game 7, tomorrow at U.S. Cellular Field.

Game 7: Jeff Suppan vs. Mark
Buehrle, U.S. Cellular Field
CHISOX WIN 'INSTANT CLASSIC' GAME 7 ON LATE COMEBACK
Walker Homers Twice in Losing Cause
CHICAGO, Oct. 17 (AP) - In a contest that was being described in the aftermath
as an "instant classic," the Chicago White Sox prevailed in an epic
Game 7 of the the American League Championship Series at U.S. Cellular Field,
7-6 over the Boston Red Sox. The game had a little bit of everything,
including multiple comebacks, managerial decisions that will provoke second
guessing, a seemingly infinite number of pitching changes, a collision at home
plate and the potential go-ahead run on base when the game finally game to a
conclusion after nearly four hours.
The White Sox, following an off-day, will open the 2003 World Series at Turner
Field in Atlanta against the Braves, who defeated the Florida Marlins, four
games to two, in the NLCS. The National League secured home field
advantage in the World Series by winning this year's All-Star Game, played,
coincidentally, at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the White Sox.
The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the first against White Sox starter
Mark Buehrle. With two outs, Todd Walker, presaging a big game with the
bat, hit a solo home run to right. It was Walker's second homer of the
series, but it wouldn't be his last.
The White Sox roared back in the bottom half of the first and drove Boston
starter Jeff Suppan from the game in the process. The inning started
innocently enough as Suppan retired Roberto Alomar on a grounder to third and
struck out Carlos Lee. But Frank Thomas singled to left and Magglio
Ordonez walked on five pitches, putting runners on first and second. Carl
Everett then laced a double that rolled all the way to the right-center field
fence, scoring both runners and giving Chicago a 2-1 lead. Paul Konerko
worked the count full and doubled to left-center, scoring Everett to make the
score 3-1 and when Joe Crede followed with a two-bagger of his own off the left
field wall, scoring Konerko, the White Sox had done something they never did
during the 2003 regular season: hit three consecutive doubles. It
also gave them a 4-1 lead and spelled the end of the day for Suppan. Red
Sox manager Grady Little replaced him with John Burkett, who was making his
third appearance in relief in the ALCS. Burkett yielded a single to left
to Jose Valentin, which advanced Crede to third, but Miguel Olivo popped out,
finally ending the inning.
Burkett went on to hold the White Sox at bay until he was lifted from the game
in the sixth inning, giving the Red Sox a chance to get back in the contest.
Buehrle pitched out of a potential mess in the fourth. Walker led off with
a single but Manny Ramirez rolled into a 5-4-3 double play to clear the bases
with two outs. That proved to be a key development because David Ortiz
drew a walk and was doubled to third by Kevin Millar before Buehrle fanned Bill
Mueller to end the inning.
Boston finally began to chip away, to no one's surprise, in the fifth.
Trot Nixon led off with a single and, after Jason Varitek flied to center,
Johnny Damon dropped a base hit into center field, putting runners on first and
second. Nomar Garciaparra lined out to Konerko at first for the second
out, but Walker ripped his third hit of the game, into the right field
corner. Nixon scored easily, but the White Sox executed a brilliant relay,
from right fielder Ordonez to second baseman Alomar to catcher Olivo. The
ball beat Damon who ran over Olivo who nonetheless held onto the ball. The
Red Sox had picked up a run, cutting the deficit to 4-2, but the play at the
plate ended the inning with no further damage occuring.
Boston drew even closer in the sixth. Ramirez led off with his second hit
of the game--the eighth of the contest off Buehrle. The Chicago starter
remained in the game long enough to retire Ortiz on a fly to right, but then was
lifted in favor of Scott Sullivan. He struck out Millar but Mueller's
single advanced Ramirez to second. That brought Scott Schoenweiss into the
game to face Nixon who promptly laced a double to right, scoring Ramirez and
moving Mueller to third. Varitek grounded to third to end the inning, but
the Red Sox now trailed by a single run.
The White Sox picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Konerko doubled down the right field line to start the inning and Crede laid
down a beautiful sacrifice, moving Konerko to third. That finally knocked
Burkett out of the game after 4 2/3 innings of much needed effective
relief. Alan Embree replaced Burkett and Valentin greeted him by lofting a
sacrifice fly to center, scoring Konerko and increasing the Chicago lead to 5-3.
Then came the fateful seventh. Schoenweiss was still on the mound for the
White Sox and he yielded a lead-off triple to right-center to Damon.
Garciaparra then rolled a single into left, scoring Damon and cutting the White
Sox lead back to a single run. That brought Walker to the plate. He
worked ahead in the count, 2-0, and then unloaded on a Schoenweiess fastball,
depositing it into the seats just down the right field line for his fourth hit
of the game and his second home run of the contest, giving the Red Sox their
first lead since the top of the opening frame in the process. Boston now
held a 6-5 advantage and a sold out U.S. Cellular Field was as quiet as a
tomb. Billy Koch entered the game for the White Sox and walked Ramirez,
and then Kelly Wunsch was called on by Chicago manager Jerry Manuel.
Wunsch retired all three batters he faced, but Boston had scored three runs in
the inning.
Embree and Brandon Lyon worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh and Wunsch
retired Nixon, walked Varitek and fanned Damon to start the top of the
eighth. Jon Garland, who hadn't made a relief appearance all season, was
called on by Manuel to get the final out of the inning and he did so, inducing
Garciaparra to fly to right.
Lyon was on the mound to open the bottom of the eighth and worked ahead of
Everett 0-2 but gave up a single to center. Everett was replaced by pinch
runner Willie Harris. Konerko flied out to deep center on the second pitch
he saw for the first out but Harris stole second on the first pitch to Crede.
On a 1-1 offering, Crede then dropped a single into shallow center, scoring
Harris to tie the game to a sustained roar from the huge home crowd. Scott
Sauerbeck then entered the game for Boston as Tony Graffanino came out of the
dugout to run for Crede at first. Sauerbeck did his job, striking out
Valentin for the second out of the inning, and Scott Williamson, the team's
sixth pitcher of the game, was called upon by Grady Little to face Miguel Olivo,
who was allowed to bat for himself despite a 1-for-13 performance thus far in
the ALCS. On a 2-2 pitch, Olivo came through in a big way, lining a double
into the right field corner. Graffanino was off on contact and tried to
score. The relay throw to the plate by Walker was wild; Graffanino scored
the go ahead run and Olivo ended up at third. The U.S. Cellular crowd was
defeaning, as the White Sox reclaimed the lead, 7-6. Alomar ended the
inning by flying to Damon in center, and the Red Sox had three outs left to
foster one more comeback.
Damaso Marte came on for Chicago in the ninth, the seventh pitcher used by the
White Sox in the game. Walker was the first batter he faced and he lined
to left for out number one. Ramirez then singled to left-center, his third
hit of the game. Damian Jackson came on as a pinch runner. Little
then decided to have Dave McCarty pinch hit for Ortiz, in an attempt to secure a
platoon advantage against the southpaw Marte, but he fanned for the second
out. Kevin Millar was due next and Marte fell behind him and walked the
Boston first baseman, putting the potential tying and winning runs on
base. Adrian Brown entered the game as a pinch runner for Millar, bringing
Mueller to the plate. Marte worked ahead 1-2 and the fired a
fastball. Mueller tapped it toward third. Graffanino, who had stayed
in the game defensively after scoring the go-ahead run in the previous
half-inning, fielded the ball cleanly and fired to first ahead of Mueller to end
the game and the series. The White Sox dugout emptied, mobbing Marte and
the rest of the Chicago players already on the field and the crowd went berserk.
Damaso Marte was named the ALCS MVP. He appeared in five of the seven
games, saved two of them, and allowed no runs in six pressure-filled
innings. Marte held the vaunted Red Sox offense to two hits while striking
out 11. Also considered for the award were Jose Valentin (.478, six
doubles, a home run and five walks but only two runs scored and three driven in)
and Frank Thomas (.345, two doubles, two home runs, three walks, six runs
scored).
