BURNITZ'S 3 HRS PACE DODGERS WHITEWASH OF PADS
L.A. Season High 6 Long Balls; Nomo Fires Shutout
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14 (AP) - Jeromy Burnitz belted three home runs and Hideo
Nomo tossed a two-hit complete game shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers whipped
the San Diego Padres, 7-0 at Dodger Stadium. Burnitz has homered 15 times
in 48 games with the Dodgers after being acquired in a trade with the New York
Mets in mid-July. David Ross hit a pair of home runs for Los Angeles and
Adrian Beltre added his 16th of the season. Overall, Los Angeles hit a
season-high six home runs, accounting for all of their tallies.
Dodgers starter Hideo Nomo continued his second half turnaround by stifling the
Padres on two hits to record his second shutout of the year. After posting
a 4.84 earned run average through the end of June, Nomo's ERA since the
beginning of July now stands at 2.58.
The Dodgers got to Padres starter Ben Howard in the second inning when Burnitz
and Ross hit back-to-back solo home runs. It was just the third time all
year that the Dodgers had hit consecutive homers. In the National League,
only the Chicago Cubs and Montreal Expos have had fewer instances of
back-to-back home runs (two each).
Los Angeles added to its lead in the fourth when, with one out, Adrian Beltre
doubled to left-center and Burnitz cracked his second home run of the game.
In the sixth, Burnitz recorded the 17th instance of three or more home runs in a
single game in the major leagues this season by driving a hanging Trevor Hoffman
change-up into the seats down the right field line, increasing the Dodgers' lead
to 5-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers capped the scoring with a pair of solo
home runs. Beltre crushed a Brandon Villafuerte offering halfway up the
left field pavilion and, one out later, Ross belted his second long ball of the
game, accounting for the 7-0 final score.
Meanwhile, Nomo was handcuffing the Padres, holding them to a pair of singles--a
one-out base hit off the bat of Brian Giles in the third and Gary Matthews Jr.'s
opposite field safety leading off the eighth. San Diego never managed to
get a baserunner past second base.
