SHIELDS, PERCIVAL COMBINE TO 1-HIT A'S
1st Halos 1-0 Win of Season
OAKLAND, Sept. 11 (AP) - Scott Shields and Troy Percival combined on a
one-hitter as the Anaheim Angels squeaked past the Oakland Athletics 1-0 at
Network Associates Coliseum. It was the 11th one-hitter of the major
league season and only the second such combined effort; Wayne Franklin and
Valerio de los Santos of the Milwaukee Brewers combined on a 10-inning
one-hitter in a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park on August
22.
Oakland starter Rich Harden was the hard luck loser, yielding the game's only
run in the top of the eighth inning.
Shields had a no-hitter intact into the sixth inning but, with one out, Eric
Byrnes grounded a single into left field. The only other Athletics
baserunner in the entire game was Scott Hatteberg, who drew a one-out walk off
Shields in the fifth. In that same inning, Angels outfielders made a pair
of brilliant catches, preserving the no-hitter, at least for the moment.
Eric Owens and Chone Figgins both made diving catches, robbing Jose Guillen and
Ramon Hernandez respectively of extra bases.
In the top of the eighth, Wilson Delgado drew a lead-off walk from Harden.
Jose Molina tried to sacrifice Delgado into scoring position, but Harden fielded
the bunt and fired to shortstop Miguel Tejada for the force at second.
Jeff DaVanon was summoned to pinch run for Molina and promptly stole second
base. Alfredo Amezaga followed by lining a single to right, scoring
DaVanon with the game's only tally.
Troy Percival came on in the ninth for Shields and retired the A's in order to
complete the shutout, Anaheim's ninth of the season.
Oakland's magic number to clinch the American League West remains 10, pending
the outcome of the Seattle Mariners' game with the Texas Rangers.
