LOAIZA, MARTE FAN 17; CHISOX STILL FALL TO TRIBE
Big Hurt Belts 53rd HR in Loss

CHICAGO, Sept. 6 (AP) - Estaban Loaiza struck out 15 batters in eight innings of work but still came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision as the Chicago White Sox fell to the Cleveland Indians, 3-2 at U.S. Cellular Field.  It was the fourth straight loss--and 12th in the last 16 games--for the slumping White Sox, who nevertheless remained in a tie for first place with the Minnesota Twins in the American League's Central Division.  The Twins dropped their third straight, 6-3, to the Texas Rangers at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Loaiza became only the second American League pitcher--and sixth overall in the major leagues this year--to strike out at least 15 in a single game.  Reliever Damaso Marte struck out both batters he faced in relief of Loaiza in the ninth inning giving the Chicago pitching staff a total of 17 strikeouts in the game.  That sets a new AL high for the year and ties the season high major league mark.  Curt Schilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks struck out 17 Milwaukee Brewers on April 12 at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix; Kevin Brown of the Los Angeles Dodgers combined with two relievers to fan 17 Philadelphia Phillies in a 5-1 win at Veterans Stadium on April 29.

The Indians drew first blood in this one when Brandon Phillips singled in the top of the first inning and scored on Casey Blake's two-out double.

The White Sox evened the game in the home half of the opening frame on Frank Thomas' major league leading 53rd home run of the season.

Cleveland took the lead for good in the third.  Coco Crisp led off with a single, stole his 14th base of the season and then came home when Phillips doubled off the base of the left field fence.  The Indians added a key insurance run in the fifth when Phillips--who had a big day with three hits, two for extra bases, two runs scored and a pair driven in--hit his seventh home run of the season, giving Cleveland a 3-1 lead.

Indians starter Jason Stanford held Chicago to just two hits over seven innings, but ran into trouble in the eighth when Joe Crede led off with a single through the box.  Aaron Rowand came on to pinch hit for Jose Valentin and Cleveland countered with Jack Cressend, but Rowand ripped a 1-1 fastball into the left-center field gap, chasing Crede to third.  Suddenly the White Sox had the tying runs in scoring position with no one out.  Brian Daubach pinch hit for Miguel Olivo and grounded out to third, scoring Crede to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Cressend stiffened, retiring Tony Graffanino on a grounder to short and striking out Carlos Lee to end the threat with the Indians on top by a run.

Danys Baez came on in the ninth and set Chicago down in order to preserve the win and earn his 30th save of the year.

Despite losing the game, Loaiza was overpowering most of the time, striking out at least one batter in each of the first eight innings.  He fanned five in a row at one point and struck out nine of 11 hitters he faced between the fifth and eighth innings.
