CARDS TRIP CUBS ON MORRIS 1-HITTER
St. Louis Starter Provides Offense As Well
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 28 (AP) - Matt Morris tossed a complete game one-hitter and
drove in both of his team's runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1
victory over the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium. Morris is the ninth major
league pitcher to throw a one-hitter this season and the third in the last
week. Curt Schilling of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Victor Zambrano of
the Tampa Bay Devil Rays both accomplished the feat in the past six days.
Morris set down the first nine batters he faced, but walked Kenny Lofton to
begin the fourth inning, leading to the game's first run. Lofton stole
second base and advanced to third on Ramon Martinez's sacrifice. Sammy
Sosa drew a walk and Moises Alou followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to center,
scoring Lofton.
The Cardinals came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning
against Chicago starter Carlos Zambrano. Jim Edmonds led off the inning
with a base hit and Scott Rolen walked, putting runners on first and
second. Tino Martinez's swinging bunt led to a force at third and Edgar
Renteria flied to left, leaving runners on first and second with two outs.
Zambrano worked carefully to Mike Matheny and eventually walked him, loading the
bases. Morris then bounced a single through the left side of the infield,
scoring Rolen and Martinez to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead.
After the Cubs scored, Morris retired eight batters in a row but lost his no-hit
bid with one out in the seventh when Randall Simon lined a clean single to right
field. Morris then set downthe final eight batters he faced to complete
the one-hitter.
The win keeps the Cardinals one game out of the National League wildcard lead,
behind the Florida Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies.
