1 HIT IS ENOUGH FOR M'S
Gonzalez Allows 3 Baserunners in Losing Effort

SEATTLE, Aug. 26 (AP) - The Mariners managed just one hit but made it count.  Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to account for all the scoring and Seattle defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 2-0 at Safeco Field.  Rays starter Victor Zambrano surrendered the home run with one out, immediately after walking Dan Wilson.  It was Zambrano's only mistake of the game.  Zambrano is just the eighth starting pitcher this season to record a complete game one-hitter.

Zambrano is the only pitcher in the major leagues this year to toss a complete game, allow fewer than four hits, and lose.  John Lackey and Jarrod Washburn, both of the Anaheim Angels, have each thrown a four-hit complete game that resulted in defeat.

Tampa Bay had its best scoring chance of the contest against Seattle starter Jamie Moyer in the very first inning.  Carl Crawford led off the game with a base hit but was thrown out trying to steal by Wilson.  Julio Lugo then walked and was singled to center by Aubrey Huff, but Moyer retired Rocco Baldelli on a fly to center and struck out Travis Lee.

The Rays didn't get another runner into scoring position until Crawford's two-out double in the fifth, but Lugo flied out to end the frame.  In the sixth, Huff and Baldelli opened the inning with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second, but Lee flied to left and Damian Rolls rolled into an inning-ending double play.

When Toby Hall singled with one out in the seventh, Mariners manager Lou Piniella replaced Moyer with Rafael Soriano who retired all five batters he faced.  Shigetoshi Hasegawa came on in the ninth and set down the Rays in order to record his 15th save of the season.

The victory moves Seattle to within four games of the American League West leading Oakland Athletics and keeps the Mariners within one game of the the wildcard leading New York Yankees.
