FRANKLIN & CO. 1-HIT BUCS OVER 10 INNINGS
Sexson Homers Twice, 2nd Walk-Off

MILWAUKEE, Aug. 22 (AP) - Wayne Franklin held the Pittsburgh Pirates to a single hit over nine innings and Richie Sexson's walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers their third straight win, a 2-1 extra inning decision, at Miller Park.  Sexson's walk-off home run was his second long ball of the game, accounting for all of Milwaukee's scoring.  Valerio de los Santos pitched an inning of hitless, shutout relief to earn the win for the Brewers.

As good as Franklin was, his counterpart, Kip Wells, matched him pitch for pitch.  Wells fired eight innings of one-run ball, striking out 10 before being replaced by a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth.

The Pirates jumped out on top in the third inning.  No one had reached base for either club when, with one out, Jack Wilson drove a Franklin offering over the right field wall.  Wilson's opposite field blast was his seventh home run of the season.  Pittsburgh didn't put another runner on base until Jose Hernandez drew a one-out walk in the fifth, before being gunned down trying to steal second by Brewers catcher Keith Osik.  Jeff Reboulet drew a lead-off walk for the Pirates in the seventh, but Franklin stranded him at first base en route to retiring the final nine batters he faced.  For the game, Franklin faced only 29 batters, retiring 26 of them.  After the Wilson home run, as long as Franklin was in the game, the Brewers never advanced a man past first base and stranded only one runner in nine innings.

Wells, meanwhile, retired the first 12 batters he faced, but Sexson led off the bottom of the fifth by driving a 3-2 fastball just inside the left field foul pole for his 31st home run of the year, tying the game.  Over the next 12 outs the Brewers managed a single and a walk, but never advanced a baserunner past first until after Wells was removed from the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, with reliever Joe Beimel on the mound, Bill Hall tripled to right-center, but Beimel struck out Geoff Jenkins to end the inning.

In the top of the 10th, de los Santos walked Reggie Sanders with one out and Sanders promptly stole second base, giving the Pirates their first runner in scoring position since Wilson was rounding the bases to complete his third inning home run.  The Brewers walked Craig Wilson intentionally, putting runners on first and second.  Hernandez rolled weakly to short for the second out, with the runners advancing to second and third.  J.J. Davis then struck out to retire the side.

Mark Corey came on for Pittsburgh in the bottom of the 10th, fell behind Sexson 3-1, and tried to slip a fastball past him.  Sexson deposited the pitch into the left field seats for a walk-off home run.  It was the second time this season Sexson had hit two home runs in the same game and the Pirates have been the victims both times.  The first occasion was a 5-4 Milwaukee loss on April 10 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
